    olympic draw

i am sure you are all happy to know the draw for fencing has been done

    follow the link:

    http://www.athens2004.com/en/resultsFencing/results

needs a little bit of navigation. click on men's or women's, then xlick each event and in the box marked 'available information' click on 'results bracket'

you'll also quickly spot that the jacobson's are on course for a last eight meeting. wouldn't want to be their mum watching that one...

I made the following prediction for the ME results:
    Obry
    Kolobkov
    Boisse

But it will never happen... All the French epeeists gonna fight for the same quarter final! Gosh!

    Any other comments?

I'm checking with the FIE to make sure these are the final draws. Prior information had these as prelim with adjustments to be made the night before.

I'll post here when I get confirmation.

Means assuming all other wins granted, Sada and Emily still fence in the 8.

Zero chance for the USA sweep people seemed to expect :P

So Emily is #3 in the world and that gets her a top 8 draw against her #1 sister. That makes since. Guess all those good results just went to hell and are meaningless. Moral of the story, just make the olympics and they will seed you where you want and not where you should be.

Anybody have any info on how or why that happened? From #3 to #8 or 9?

Emily is not #3 in the world. Emily is ranked 10th in the world and came in with the #9 seed since #8 Velikaya (RUS) did not qualify for the Games. Mariel Zagunis is the #4 ranked fencer and flipped w/#3 Touya to get out of the US bracket.

The most challenging bouts for Sada will be Emily and then the Netchaeva/Tan winner. Both have caused problems for Sada in the past. I think Mariel has the easier path to the medal rounds.

Best chances for making individual medal rounds among the US men competitors in the 3 weapons: Dan Kellner and Ivan Lee. After that, it looks like it will take a major upset to get our guys out of the round of 16 or 8.

I am a little confused. I was looking at the seedings and it would appear that Sada and Emily would meet in the 4 not the 8. Sada would face either Faez Miclin or LEE Shin Mi in the 8.

The really tough draw though is for Erin Smart in Women's Foil. If she wins her first bout, she gets to fence Valentina Vezzali. Yikes.

Sada and Emily will fence in the 8th (8eme de finale in French), that's means a tab of 16.

Lee is screwed because he has to face the real number one (Poz) to make the final 8 if he gets that far which I think he will. Looks like Smart and Rogers have the best chance in mens sabre if they can get past their first encounters.

ME does not look good for US,
looks good for Hungary unless they party all night before :-)

I think table of 8 will look like something like this:

    Kovacs HUN - Xie/Zhao (?) CHN
    Carillo CUB - Jeannet FRA
    Imre HUN - Boczko HUN
    Kolobkov RUS - Rota ITA

I was thinking the same thing...
We're no threat, people, we're not dirty, we're not mean
We love everybody but we do as we please
    When the weather's fine,
We go fishin' or go swimmin' in the sea
    We're always happy
Life's for livin', yeah, that's our philosophy

I seem to recall that Soren beat Kovacs at the Worlds in Cuba. We'll see how far Kovacs goes. Certainly experience goes to Kovacs (not to mention power-lefty). I think Kolobkov can still pull it all the way out to medals. Hvn't seen Rota fence in a long time, but Jeannet is beatable when he over-commits in deep straight attacks. Carrillo is somewhat similar style, from what I've seen, though more patient, and maybe a faster counter-attacker. If Kolobkov gets past Rota, I think the field is open for him to nail the gold.

Do you really think that Carillo can beat Boisse or Obry? I dont think he did any podium this year whereas these two guys did.... If Carillo is in quarter final, it will be really a surprise for me...

And I dont tell that because I am French.

Boisse should win that match up. Not sure about Obry. Although it would be kinda cool to see him in lose in the gold again.

May you tell me why? Have you something against this guy?

By the way, if I were him, I'd prefer get two silver medals in the Olympics than nothing...

The thing about ME is the unpredicability. You get dark horses. I guess mine would be Carrillo, who to me seems more athletic than Boisse, from the vy little that I've seen of them. Not sure about Obry, though it seems he may be just past his prime (?).
