Side note to Peach's post... they DON'T follow NAC format with the top 16 getting byes to the 48 or the round of pools at the 48 to pools at 24 to DE of 16. And they don't use repechage.

They do promote (at least) 80% in the open events. U events everyone advances to DEs.

The event's really evolved into quite a competition, with many fencers from the East Coast and Northeast using it as a good prep event for Nationals. When I last fenced it (back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth) it was much smaller, more recreational than anything, and held in the fencing room and the old upstairs gym at M.I.T. Now it's become a behemoth of sorts, taking over the main gym at Brandeis for an entire weekend.

Well, it was once again a behemoth. There were twice as many women for the open women's sabre as last year. High level referees all over the place, dealers, good armorers, a concession stand, a funny T-shirt, and funny prizes as usual. It was worth the trip for the fencing alone.

Who else was there and how did you do?

I was there... both days... as a spectator, supporter, and repair guy... congrats to brad baker (oiuyt) on a great weekend... i'll let him gloat to everyone... best thing i saw all weekend was the gold medal match in mens team epee... taro yama****a, roni gold and rob charlton against justin meehan, simon laight, and chris zebuth... roni scored in overtime to take the win 44-43... unbelievable battle the whole way... all 9 encounters were quite memorable for their own reasons...

So how did Brad (oiuyt) do?

Oh, yeah, and in the women's sabre at least they promoted 100%, thank goodness. I would hate to travel to a non-point event like that and not get at least one DE.

I was there. Did crappy. Don't want to talk about it. Three words: sloppy von slopperston.

Brandeis U has a nice gym and the honeys were looking good.

Brad's sabre team placed second (correction, third actually) (including Brian Bower,Jonathan Marcel, and someone else I can't recall) to a team consisting of Tim Morehouse, Evan Efstathiou, and another fencer...Dan Hooks maybe?)

Brad did well in his Epee pool, but I'm not sure as to the final results, although it's good to see that Taro and his Epee team won.

I was there shooting photos, probably about five rolls in total, and once I have the images developed I'll post them at Photo.net and provide a link.

The men's foil pool was the most overwhelming, and I think I have a shot of all of them, over 100 I believe for the Open?

    Hi,
First a couple of corrections to Evan's post. The fourth on my team was Matt Durgavich. Evan Efstathiou was on the third place team, Daniel Hooks wasn't there.

My individual results: I took 2nd (of 54) in Epee and 3rd (of 40) in Sabre (open event in both cases).

I'm late for practice, so that's all I really have time for now, I'll probably post more reflections on the weekend later.

I was there. Did bad on Sat. Just wasn't with it. Lost all my pool bouts and was then Brad's first DE victim. Lost 15-6 to him.

Sat we (Myslef, Mike Macri, Matt Galvin) took 4th in men's team epee. Fencing Meehan, Zebuth and Laight was interesting. Though I took great pleasure in annoying Zebuth when I got a couple on lighters on him. I think I got 3 points on both him and Laight. Only two on Justin though.

It was fun but we tried too hard against them I think. All three of us were dead when we were fencing for third.

Next year we will medal. Galvin can only get better at NYU.

I wish I knew who everybody was, I woulda looked for you. I didn't really watch any epee or foil, and the individual open sabre events were on Sunday so I didn't see any Saturday events. Congrats on the 2nd & 3rd!

I did well in the women's sabre (32 fencers) --finished 2nd to a very competent kid from Prise de Fer, Daria Schneider.

The really cool thing was that in the top 8 I think I was the only one over 21 (waaaay over 21, too).

I watched Tim Morehouse defeat Stetsiv--Stetsiv looked like he couldn't really move any more or remember what to do at that point, and Tim hit him with an inordinate number of attacks on preparation.

That was about how I felt in the final bout. "Strip glue" I call it, because my feet are apparently glued down.

At check-in everyone was given a bag (one of those individual sized 1oz bags) of Cape Cod Golden Russet potato chips. Winners also got large (20oz?) bags of Lays chips.

Depending on the day, either 5-8th place or top 8 also received a potato. 2nd place finishers received Mr. (or Mrs.) Potato Head lunchboxes (full of magnetic fun and candy treats). 3rd place finishers got Mr (or Mrs) Potato Head keychains. 1st place finishers also got potato banzai kits.

Just some fun stuff to make it more interesting. Oh, and top 8 all got fairly cool little trophies and 1st place finishers get to keep these fairly big silver bowl-shaped trophies for the next year.

Pictures from Saturday and Sunday: http://members5.clubphoto.com/lev384...de_Terre_2001/

I was 16th out of 54 in men's open epee, 7th out of 11 in men's team epee.

I left my Mrs. Potato Head lunchbox behind <wah>. And don't forget the potato.

Nice photos! Great epee team and foil shots.

Does the Pomme de Terre take international entrants? One of the guys is going out with a Canadian and he will probably turn up at some point. And if there's one thing I'll be doing this coming year it's fence abroad.

Oh aye and is there a website?

If they let us Philadelphians fence up there in Massachusetts, they're sure to let ANYone fence <grin>. I'll let others more qualified answer the question of how foreign nationals are expected to handle the USFA membership requirement, but the details of the Pomme de Terre are posted at the New England Division's website (http://www.neusfa.org).

"Does the Pomme de Terre take international entrants?"

They do. Last year I chatted with a competitor from Mexico who'd briefly been a member of his country's national team, and Ilya Krouglikov, a member of the Canadian Junior Epee Team also competed.

They definately take international competitors. I believe they ask for proof of membership from USFA/CFF/FIE, so if coming from somewhere other than the US/Canada an FIE license would be required. Information about the event gets posted each year on the New England division website ( http://www.neusfa.org ). There isn't a website for the event itself.
