Fencing in Miami I recently accepted a job in Miami, and will be moving there this Autumn. From this page and the USFA page, I found links to several clubs in Miami (some links dead, but maybe not the clubs). Almost all the live links were single-page info splashes that don't give a good feel for what the club is like.
I'd love to hear from anyone with personal experience in the area, what the fencing scene is like there. Tallahassee is two divisions away, and noone here has first-hand experience with the Miami fencing scene.

Array It has been awhile since I have been down that way but it used to be very good. Bob cochrane is still fencing as is Bill Becker. come up to sectionals in May and ask around, they should be up in Atlanta. If you give a man a fire, he is warm for the night.
If you set a man on fire, he is warm for the rest of his life. -
Thanks for the reply, Swordsen. I'll keep an eye out for those two. I've already committed to the Sunshine State Games, one week separated from the SE sectionals, so I don't think I can afford to make that one also. I hope to chat with a few Miamians (Miamiites?) at the state games, though!

I didn't realize that Miami, Okla., had a large enough population to support a fencing group. (Pop: 13,700)
Just goes to show that you can find cells of dedicated sports enthusiasts almost anywhere. -
And boy, is it gonna stink being an oceanographer in Oklahoma! -

Array They can't be talking of maimi Ok, I used to live around there. Those people are so simple the only fencing they know of is the type that keeps their cattle from getting into their houses. ... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.

Careful with the "simple" comments. Those are nice folk.
For those of you who have never visited, you might find it interesting that locals pronounce the town with a softer second 'i', as "Miam-uh" instead of "Miam-ee" -

Array I've never been in Miami enough to know that, but from my experience living in Stillwater for 15 years, I have developed a bad taste in my mouth for the whole state.
Do they really have fencing? ... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.

That's OK -- the whole state feels the same way about you, too. ;-)
As for their fencing program? ... I dunno. Rick_L says in this thread that they've got several groups already. Perhaps he's refering to the barbed wire collectors clubs? -
Quit (no longer with us)

LOL! I had assumed Scirius Rex's first post was tongue-in-cheek, and replied in kind. I indeed meant Miami, Florida - I don't think Miami OK is "two divisions away" from Tallahassee, unless there's a Tallahassee, Texas

Array I really think that Rick_L is referring to Miami, Florida.

Nope, I meant simple as in simple minded. I can say this, I've got relatives that deal with cattle all the time. One of my cousins aspires to be a sheep raiser. My grandparents are pretty intelligent and have good taste, but the rest of them are all a bunch of simple hicks... yup ... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.
