Jeff,

I have two suggestions off the top of my head. I would bet you could find
references to Silver's challenge of Saviolo in both Egerton Castle's
"Schools and Masters of Fence from the Middle Ages to the Eighteenth
Century" and, more recently, in Richard Cohen's book "By the Sword".
As I recall, both recounted elements of Silver's fiasco and the challenge to
Saviolo.

Hope this helped!

Yours in Chivalry,

Magnus

This looks like a possible classical fencing tournament held at the Stafford
Lake Ren fair in Novato CA.

The details are sparse though. does any one know anything about this
tournament?

John Sullins

Subject: George Silver Material (I haven't forgotten!)

Way back in November, I brought up some info about George Silver (that
he was something of a lumber baron, and that he'd challenged Saviolo
to a public contest). My problem was that I remembered reading this
info, But it was years ago, & I couldn't remember what I'd read it in!
A lot of my materials are in storage & I don't have easy access to 'em
(NY apartment living, you know). I haven't found my original source
yet, but I did find some reference to these facts in "Methods and
Practice of Elizabethan Swordplay" by Craig Turner & Tony Soper (page
18). It mentions details about Silver's family being granted a patent
by the Crown for an experimental lumber venture, and that George & his
brother Toby challenged Saviolo to a contest at a place called "Belle
Sauvage." They went so far as to print up handbills & posters, but
Saviolo declined to show up, which was quite an embarrasement for
Silver. (What I seem to remember from my forgotten source was that
this was not the first time Silver challenged the Italian. The
publicity was an attempt to coerce him into fighting, but Saviolo
would not be moved).

In any case, the search goes on for the missing source material, &
it's bound to surface eventually.

Cheers,
Jeff
