Anybody from the Calgary area?

Hello to all. I have recently decided that I wanted to take up Fencing as my new competitive sport. I have been looking up many sports to start and fencing really got my attention. I have heard about the Calgary Fencing Club and Gladiator. If anybody could give some advice about which place is better to go to or if there are other places to go in Calgary that would be fabulous! Thanks a lot

I currently am fencing in Calgary at the Gladiators club (I fence Sabre). There are other clubs in Calgary. The links to all their sites are at this site: www.fencing.ab.ca/clubsouth.html

As far as which is better, I can't really tell you. I like the attitude of both fencers and coaches, however I've only fenced at the one club in Calgary. There are some other Alberta fencers here who have been in the sport for longer and can tell you what clubs are good or bad better than I can. At any rate, you've chosen a great sport to start! It is incredibly addictive...

Have fun finding a club that is right for you!

Hi!

I'm not Calgarian... I'm BCian... yeah. Hello!!! Maybe we'll see each other around at competitions or something in the future. (I'm taking up fencing again this fall).

I've only just moved to Calgary, but I'm a begining level SCA fencer. Depending on what you wnat to get out of fencing as a sports hobby, this may be the form you've been looking for. SCA fencing is a martial art, as opposed to a sport, per se. It is entirely based on the schools of fencing taught throughout the medieval and renaissance times. It deals with a variety of weapon styles and combinations, is much more flexible and aggressive (in my humble opinion, anyway), and generally just a lot of fun. There are open practices three times a week held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings in the field beside Banff Trail Community Center (on the corner of 20th st and 20th ave, within easy walking distance of the C-train station). I'd strongly reccomend that you at least go take a look and see if it's something that interests you. There are some very pleasant and highly skilled fighters who volunteer their time as instructors.
