I have to agree about the "easier to master" idea. It might easier to fence novice sabre than it is to fence novice foil or epee. Perhaps you're more likely to hit your opponent by accident since there are more angles from which to approach. But I'm still working hard on learning sabre after a mere six years of training every week and taking lessons.

There is, however, also the fact that if I were to attempt to master foil it would take a HECK of a lot longer because it doesn't interest me. I woulda quit by now and taken up tai chi or tae kwon do or gotten another graduate degree if they hadn't let me fence sabre.

    Luca,

    No, I didn't say that. I was quoting d'art.

My comment was that in the hands of an Epeeist, a foil is a toy, as in, they don't know how to use it properly. I was being sarcastic and joking.

I am a foilist, and nothing else.

i've always felt that the foil is more precise in nature, smaller motions are usually instilled in the student, whereas in epee, you can make much larger motions, and in saber you can go all out, really whapping the arm all the way out or up, and whack downward, it's very different in body motions.

My name makes it obvious where my main interests lie, but I also do some epee as well. Took it up during the summer due to a shortage of sabre fencers at the club.

My user name is what people call me when they want to fence, so I guess I'd have to say Saber (or Sabre) is the BEST!

BTW, This is my first time posting here.

The ratio of epee fencers to other types of fencers is fairly large. What is it about epee that everyone likes so much??? It would be interesting if this was a real poll, and we could see exactly what the ratio was, eh Craig? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

According to profile responses (now THERE'S a scientific measure if I've ever heard of one...) we have the following as primary weapon:
    None or no response: 1023
    Foil: 258
    Epee: 106
    Sabre: 72
    3-Weapon: 15
    Foil/Epee: 8
    Foil/Sabre: 5
    Epee/Sabre: 3
    Other things receiving votes include:
Gun, AK-47, dirk, katana: 2 each
Automatic pistol, bow & arrow, brain, chopstick splinters, computer, drill, fairytale dragon, fart, glove, gurney, G's spade, HK MP5, HK usp40, kids, pen, pouting, pulse rifle, sarcasm, wit, words, 19th Century foil: once each

As you can see there was less than a 1/3 response rate. Other factors include people here being "clever" in their responses, inactive accounts, and people who've lost old passwords ad so therefore have multiple accounts.

Other bits of information gleaned from looking at profiles:

937 of the 1522 users have posted 10 or fewer times.

The most prolific (top 10) posters are:
    Arcon 2169 posts
    Zelda 1796 posts
    Moonitic 1792 posts
    EDew 1181 posts
    D'Artagnan1673 1137 posts
    Lochinvar 1037 posts
    Purple Fencer 980 posts
    DamedEscrime 940 posts
    Inquartata 892 posts
    Damianip 877 posts

Interesting to note how close Zelda and Moon are, especially with the huge drop-off down to 4th place.

Obviously the above is highly subject to change....
