Foil, but sabre soon, I hope. Maybe epee some day, but foil and sabre interest me most.

That post was sooooooo funny! And you sounded so very sincere!
I mean epee being better than saber! Pure genius!

Yes, this is very common, when you go to compititions, it seems that usually it's just Foil and Epee. Though both may be more "fun", I think that I will go with the most sophisticated of them, the Foil.

Foil! Foil! Foil! You have to think more than you do in Epee. Sabre is most definitely next! I've never fenced Sabre, but it definitley interests me! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

"I don't see how anyone could like a weapon that's best viewed in time lapse photography"

I once was watching an Epee bout. Then I went and bought some blades from a vendor. Then I went and got a snack. Then I walked around looking for cute girls. Then I went and bought some shoes. Then I went to the bathroom.

When I came back to watch the bout, no one had moved. Sometimes they even have to dust off the Epee fencers- the cobwebs get really thick......

Stop exaggerating! I'm sure they had bounced a few times and maybe even beat the blade once or twice!

Just because YOUR division is like that does not mean that most are. when I go to competitions (opens), it seems that usually we get B1 epee (possibly A1, but usually B1), B1 Sabre, and B1 Foil (again, possibly A1). however, I don't take that to mean that most competitions across the country are like that. generally, competitions have all three weapons represented.

Also, about the foil being most sophisticated.....

    well, to each their own.

In my experience, epee frequently has more complex actions than foil. Before this starts an argument: I am NOT saying that you have to think MORE in epee, just that you cannot think LESS.

    Of course, I'm joking.

Epee is every bit as complex as foil. Just complex in different ways. I doesn't suit my personality.

The only thing I find amusing is when people call it the "Real Weapon", because, lets be honest here, none of the weapons is very "real".

i thought about this for a few months, i really cant'decide between epee or foil. i liked foil better for a while because it was lighter and easier to handle, and i knew more about it, but then when i took up epee, i found it to be a great weapon, i like the parries, and i like the variety of targets, i have only taken one formal saber lesson, but have played around with it from time to time. i think it's a great weapon, but requires alot of specialized classwork, that i couldn't do it proper justice. i'm almost of the opinion, that you should stick with one weapon - especially those fencers who really can fence very well at at high level. to go even higher with it, you need to stick to one thing, then you can master it.

Latenight, you said that the Foil is a toy compared to the Epee, I find that as the largest opinion stated by anyone in a long time. It's not a toy, and yes, it's practically a fact that Foil IS more complicated than both. People that I know(and in many more areas) turn to the Sabre and Epee more because it is easier to progress much faster in those blades than it is Foil.

Epeemike- When's the last time you were at an A1 foil competition? For that matter an A1 epee competition (not including sectionals)? I'd be slightly surprised if you'd been to either (locally) in the past year. New England division mens and mixed opens are almost always B1 regardless of weapon. Of course with the new system we should start seeing B2 events mixed in. Hopefully some A1/A2 sabre competitions as well....

Sorry, forgot to answer the question....

    Sabre
    Epee
    Foil

It's all fencing, it's all good. What I'd love to see would be more three weapon individual tournaments. Get people to play with things other then their primary weapon...

    Epee: 99% of the time
Foil: When I get really really bored and there are no epeeists around.
Saber: Fenced it twice. Once because they wanted an 8th person (two people left injured) and once last week because only saberists were around.

I started with foil but got annoyed with bad directors. Around the same time I destroyed/disabled all of the club foils so it was decided I should fence epee. Officially I can not fence saber at the club for fear of decapitations.

Mmm, well, "people I know" isn't very scientific, though. I could counter it with MY experience, which is that both I and most of my sabre-fencing aquaintances most definitely did NOT take up the sabre becuae it was "easier to progress" in it than in foil. We took it up because we were temperamentally more suited to it and far more interested in it than in foil, for which most of us simply don't care, for various reasons. It "called" to us, in short. It was not merely a "default" weapon for those too impatient to do foil. ( Not but what I don't have serious doubts about the validity of the contention that sabre and epee are easier to master than foil, either. )
