I could use a spot of help

Well, I'm just trying to find out a bit more of fencing and I was wondering if any of you have some web addresses for tips on fencing, the type of thing that might show how to do certain moves, show the footwork of it, the beginning steps or just a few suggestions or tips. Please reply quickly so I can have a go at fencing as soon as I might be able to, thanks!

First off, take a look around this site. There are a ton of resources in the various sections (Look under the "Training" link.) If you're not ready to purchase a book or video on fencing, then go to your local library and check out what books they have on the sport.

Another site that has some video clips of high level (world) fencing bouts is: www.fencingfootage.com.

Fencing.Net has some videos in it - you can usually find links to the clips from these forums - just go to the "Search" link and type in "video" or "video clip".

    Cheers,
    Craig

Seeing as how epee is obviously the best weapon, Once you inevitably choose it as your primary weapon I suggest that you read http://faculty.fmcc.suny.edu/mcdarby...e-Info-Etc.htm
(sorry about the long link) it gives you a good amount of detail and not only explains actions but explains strategy. Books and reading is a good beginning, but the 2 most important parts of fencing are Experience and personal lessons. I suggest you find a club around where you live and begin immediately.

Obviously the writer hasn't touched a sabre in his life, especially regarding the "Totally Subjective Ranking of Attribute Importance by Weapon".

Quite right, if you're talking about me. Thanks for the help.

Sorry, but I was talking about the website EpeeConvert mentioned...

As it was some kind of epee propaganda, I tried to counter it, because there were some misconceptions about sabre fencing which of course is far superior to epee....

    Pish Posh

My name means i converted to epee from sabre. Sabre is fun and all but ultimately for lurking beheamoths who think with their bell's rather than their heads. Epee is the weapon of masters.

Thanks for the...info, I've not yet chosen between epee, rapier, and saber. I like the RoW rules of epee, but I think I can't choose any because I've got no money in which to start lessons, so I'm interested in sort of trying to teach myself, I know I can't really do that without practice, but I'd like to learn some of the steps and whatnot. If you have any suggestions let me know. One more question...are you all from the UK?

First of all, as it says in my profile, I'm not from the UK, in fact, most of these people are from the US, as this is an American forum.

Second, the 3 weapons of fencing aren't epee, rapier and sabre, but they are foil, epee and sabre.

Foil and sabre are the conventional weapons, ie the rules of Right-of-Way apply to them. In epee, there are no such rules, which makes it an entirely different game...

I think it would be best to find a fencing club nearby if you want to fence.
There are other threads pertaining to the weapon most suited to begin with, but in practice, it will mostly be foil you start with... Later on you can choose if you want to stick with foil, or switch over to sabre or epee. This choice is (mostly) entirely based on personal taste.

PS this is my 400th post, yay.....

Fencing is a difficult sport to get in to if you have no money... unless you happen to be a poor, troubled youth in NYC?

I didn't know Mr.T was a fencer! Well, welcome to the forum, and I must say, I've always respected your haircut.

Flat broke=bad. Very bad. Fencing costs like 1 bajillion dollars, and it's a monetary strain even if you're reasonably well off. To start off is $100-$200 bare minimum, less for epée, more for sabre, and then you have to replace a blade every couple months. Not to mention club fees, tournaments, USFA membership, et cetera. But it's well worth it. So good luck.

Probably 60% of the people here are from the U.S. Many are from the U.K., and the rest are usually in Canada or somewhere else in Europe. But we get all types.
