[CFML] A few questions.

Hi all.
I just did a little 'up-grade' (or 'down-grade', depending on your point
of view,) to the Historical Fencers list.
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group...rical-Fencing/
I changed the name, or rather, added to it.

Since most of my 'bouts' are with 18th century reenactors who think they
are either in a duel or a street fight, I added the word 'Dueling' to
the title.(My own interests also lean in that 'ungentlemanly' direction
as well --- however, I am certainly willing to learn from you more
learned gentlemen.)

I am also calling it a 'school' and emphasizing the fact that it was
mainly created for novice/beginners (like myself) who are interested
with 'old fashioned' fencing (Historical vs Classical??) --- and as
such, it is a place to ASK QUESTIONS of the many more experienced
members.

There are several other fencing lists out there that I've 'checked out',
however to be frank, they seem a little intimidating to a novice like
me. The few times I've asked something I've had some responses, but
nothing like those from this list.
I hope we can continue with that outlook and that others besides myself
out there that have 'thought and/or dreamed' of fencing far more than
they have actually done it, DO join in and ask some questions.

With that said, here's a few of my own.
(All you 'knowledgeable guys (and gals) out there please feel free to
jump in and get some debate going)

1) Is it better to attack or defend?
2) What should I watch, the tip of the blade, the hand or the eyes of my
opponent?
3) What would you consider your best guard (ward?) to begin with? (Which
word is right, guard or ward?)
4) Do I have this right? It was ok to use the left hand as a fending off
hand in the 16th & 17th century with a rapier but
with a small sword of the 18th century this was considered
'ungentlemanly'?
5) Is there a 'simple' salute appropriate to early matches? Anyone know
more about this Grand French salute that Kevin
mentioned?

Okay, I can come up with a dozen or so more, but you get the idea of why
I want to call this list a kind of 'fencing school'?
I hope so.

Oh ya, what about Hope's 'Hanging Guard'? One fellow responded earlier
that it didn't work for him. How about the rest of you?
all right, I'll give it a 'rest'! (g)

Sleep ye gentle,
Rest ye sound.

Wayne / 'Anxious Angus'

PS to any 'shy lurkers' out there ---
please send YOUR list of questions in so we can keep these 'experts' on
their toes! (VBG)
