On behalf of the Association for Historical Fencing and the Academy of
European Medieval Martial Arts, we are pleased to announce that the Western
Martial Arts Workshop 2004 will be held from Friday, October 22 through
Sunday, October 24, at Diana’s Castle in Amsterdam, New York.
The event offers three full days of lectures, tournaments and classes that
feature WMA from the 14th through the 19th centuries. Since its inception,
the WMAW has consistently set new standards for similar events. As the
premier international event of its kind, we hope to continue to build on
previous years by adding moderated discussions, presentations of academic
papers and the opportunity to take private instruction.
The general format includes:
- a main program of 60-minute lectures and 90-minute classes open to all
registered attendees.
- three-hour long classes running concurrently, requiring prepayment and
registration, with limited class size.
- three separate tournaments to enter: Armored, Unarmored and Rapier/Small
Sword.
- private lessons scheduled and coordinated at the event between teacher and
student, with the assistance of organizers.
The following are just some of the combative arts and weapons that will be
included:
Armored Combat, Sword & Buckler, Dussack, Quarterstaff, Wrestling, Rapier &
Dagger, Small Sword, Saber, Pugilism, Bullwhip, Navaja Sevillana, Bowie
Knife, Tomahawk, Dance de Rue.
