Form following function is how the classical form was originally developed.
It worked. Classical students must in turn learn form, technique, and
tactics in that order in order to have proper functionality.
EXACTLY! That's the most biting charge classical fencers have hurled at the sport fencers: that their style is not functional with sharps. If we then turn in the opposite direction- if, instead of stressing athleticism over blade control and footwork, we stress placing our feet EXACTLY this way and position our wrist EXACTLY that way, not because it's functional but because it's "proper form," we will have fallen into the same pit from the other side of the wooden log.
IMHO, the best debate I've seen on this forum was the debate over whether we should extend fully before lunging, or start to lung while still extending. A questioning of form to see if it was functional.
