USFA does not allow wrist straps, no, but I think most
classical fencing tournaments do. I'm not under the
impression that a lack of a wrist strap is a serious
hindrance to Italian technique, however; I don't
believe that the Greco brothers ever really used it,
or Barbasetti, for that matter. Someone who's more
familiar with Italian stuff than I (being an ardent
frenchie myself) can correct me on this, but I was
under the impression that the wrist strap originated
to serve the same function as the martingale on French
weapons -- i.e., to keep a disarmed weapon from
hitting the ground and therefore needing to be
resterilized in the middle of a duel, rather than to
modify the use of the weapon (although both devices do
certainly allow modifications in technique...)
