[CFML] flexible versus stiff foil blades Greetings all,
I bought my first foil from Santelli's. The blade was extremely
flexible. My fencing developed well generally, but my parry actions
were too large and anything circular such as a counterparry or double
were lacjing control.
A year later, I ordered an Allstar foil with the Super Allstar
blade, and requested one of the stiffest blades they had. I rushed
home from work one evening to pick up the UPS package and get back in
time for our outdoor practice.
Out of the box, the foil was set perfectly for me, and when I
started to practice with a friend, I was amazed at how much more
control I had due to a simple equipment change. It turns out that my
form was fine on the circular motions, the flexible blade just had
too much momentum. The stiffer blade stopped exactly where I wanted
it to.
I have tried to lighten my hits when drilling to compensate. The
France-Lames blade on the Santelli foil never bruised anyone. A fair
shot with the Allstar foil causes wincing.
Our salle was having some problems with Triplette blades, and
some members are now experimenting with the stiffer foil blades
offered in their SCA catalogue. Regards. John Calliott---
