Thanks for letting me vent...

Array Ah, I'm currently avoiding the real world and fumbling my way through university.
I'm sure you'll be able to find something you like, take a look around :-) There are no boundaries in love, there are no boundaries in Rock 'n' Roll -

Array So quit already! There's plenty of other jobs out there. If you're that miserable, I'd wager you probably don't enjoy what you do, either. Figure out something else that you WOULD enjoy, and go do it. And none of that "oh it's so difficult to change jobs" b.s. The hard part's figuring out what you're good at and enjoy. Once you've done that, changing jobs is a snap.
If you continue to work at a place that makes you this unhappy, you are a fool. And you will have nobody but yourself to blame, because you will have sentenced yourself to that hell.
Out of curiosity, what do you do for a living, and what would you rather be doing? -

Array Yes, I'm sure you'll find something you like. Who knows? It may come from the weirdest of places under the weirdest of circumstances! I hid from the real world for 9 years until, as my dad succinctly put it, "You're going to get out there and get a job you deadbeat!" (This was in response to my wondering out loud if I should go back for a third degree.)
Oh, he was ready to give me a third degree alright! -

Array I hate my job. Joined the public sector last year and now I see why people there don't get the respect they think they deserve!
My next door neighbour plays on the internet all day. Then talks about what a great planner she is...still havn't figured out what she does...(I did find out that she worked for all of 3 weeks in the private sector before she quit and came to the school board. ) My boss downloads all the important but boring work onto me, but when it comes time to take credit, and shake hands he's there and I'm not invited... The school board blows money out the window, nobody has more than a general concept of budget, and then sits there bewildered and *****ing at the gov't for not giving them enough money. There is 3 people to do the job of 1 everywhere. Everyone is so unionized, and human rights aware, I'm terrified of a slip of the tongue and calling a sanitary cover a manhole and getting sued for insensitivity.....
Your right...time to get out and back into reality. The public sector is right for only certain types of people. And it ain't the top of the gene pool...thats for sure. That's interesting because I've heard EXACTLY the same thing from others who are in the public sector here in Ottawa. No wonder you're a Tory! (I'm leaning Tory as well but I really liked Duceppe except that they're not running any candidates in Ontario :P)
I have way too many friends in the public sector and quite a lot of them complain about the inefficiency of the gov't, both provincial and federal. Nice to see we're not really getting anything for being taxed to death!
Sorry about the rant but I just found out that the new provincial taxes come into effect July 1 so my July pay envelopes (and for the rest of the freaking year!) will be lighter. Damn. -

Array Mine sucks. I'm a student. It sucks. I carve bokkens for spending money. My job bites. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! Array I'm also in the public sector. I dream of escape every day. The 'kissing up' is horrendous. If there was ever a punishment meted out by the government outside of prison walls, I figure this has to be it. -

I agree about Duceppe. He was a great speaker during the federal debate this week. He brought us back to a time where politician didn't just use rhetoric, and try and make the others look bad. If he agreed with another's idea, he simply said it. Man enough to call a spade a spade. Said his piece, and gave straight answers...no dancing around a topic. Unfortunately, when it comes to Canadian Sovernty, we part ways!!!
I'm a Conservative, but don't get me wrong. Social spending and public health care are fully entreched in my books. I just wanna make sure peoples taxes are spent properly, and practically. Let's face it ...they ain't being spent quite right, right now. Even Mike Harris tried to cut it back.. know what happened? The top and middle management made cuts, but they didn't slit their own wrists....they would never cut themselves out of jobs...they cut the working maintenance guy that keeps schools, and hospitals running, they cut the nurses, and support staff, teachers, and educators. But we've more consultants, superintendants, health officials, administrators, planners, coordinators, etc. than you can shake a stick at! Great......just like our military...more Generals than Tanks!!!! (This is true believe it or not!)
We are in definite need of a cleaning of house.....and time to bring back the core of was responsible gov't is. Wishful thinking eh? Blue, have you ever had discussions with PKT here? A staunch NDP. Array I guess I'm the only one here who likes his job. I was in the "real world" for a year after college, didn't much like it, and so I crawled back into the womb so to speak. Being a graduate student is way better. I take a few classes, do research that I'm interested in, and I get PAID for it. Plus in a few years I should (hopefully) have a doctorate degree. If you guys and ladies really hate your jobs, consider what pursuing an advanced degree could do for you. Jump on my sword while you can, I won't be as gentle! -

Array No offense, but working at a Uni is pretty much a public sector job.
Most of the Doctorate I know who moved on got high paying satisfying jobs in the private sector. The ones who couldn't...well took a proffesorsip.
In no way am I diminishing the position of a Doctor. But...the public sector is definitely not the top of the gene pool. I work in it.......but not for long.
Like Epee-pox said. There's no excuse. So I have applied, and am deciding which position to take in the real world. Hope I'm not obsolete being a whole year in the public cobweb... I'd lean towards the Tories but not the NEW Tories -- I guess I'm more of the old Tories before Mulroney blew the party to pieces back in the late 80s!
Yes -- I did like Duceppe. He WAS man enough to agree with others. It's such a shame that, at the core, he wants to dismember Canada. Sigh...... FUnny but someone made a godo point. The Bloc should set up candidates out west -- God knows there are people out there who would LOVE to remove Quebec (aka Kwee-bek) from Canada! As a joke goes, the Newfoundlanders would love it because it would cut down on their travel time to Ontario!
Responsible gov't? HA! Dream on, my friend. Dream on. I remember someone mentioning to me that those who are most qualified to run a gov't are those who have enough sense to NOT want to do it.
Staunch NDP? Wow. I wonder what he thinks of his party leader. Yeah, you know who I mean! The used car salesman. :P
Thing about politics (and a lot of human activities) is that humans will, more often than not, act to further their own interests for survival and/or self-aggrandizement. So .... those in politics will do what is best for them. Sorry but it IS a cynical view. I know. -

Except that I hate it when, for every dollar I make, anywhere from 25 cents to 43 cents is taken away! Yes. It IS that high. Once you reach a certain income level, almost half (if not more than half) of every dollar you make goes somewhere else. THAT is my beef. It's not really with my job, it's just with .... well, taxation. Hey, didn't Americans do something about taxation back in the late 1700s? -

Out of curiosity, what do you do for a living, and what would you rather be doing? It's not that I don't want to quit, I just have a family to support, so I can't quit until I have something else lined up. I've been interviewing for several weeks, and the problem seems to be that I'm either over qualified or underqualified for everything I've found. No one wants to train me, but they don't want me to do something below my experience level either because their afriad I'll get bored and quit.
To answer your other question, I'm an Administrative Assistant, secretary, flunky, whatever you want to call it. I'm good at what I do, I just hate where I'm doing it.

Yes, I believe the americans did do a little something about it back then, although some historians claim they merely had a little tea party. Some time later Ronald Reagan lowered income, too, by quite a bit if I'm not mistaken, although I'm told he also raised them in other areas, not totally sure about the second point.
Civiltech,
No offense taken, professors are public employees (except at private universities, which usually don't pay as well) but I can think of some much worse jobs to take. It really depends on how much you like teaching undergrads I suppose. But with a Ph.D there are a lot of doors open that just aren't there even with a master's, although you might need even more school for some of them. -K Yes, lots of people feel this way. I just got laid off recently, but I can relate since I've been in that situation before. As others have mentioned, change of jobs would be your best bet. However, I don't recommend you quiting until you have something else lined up. Perhaps, in your area there are plenty of jobs to go around. Yet, it's hard to predict how long it will take you to find a new job once you quit your current one. You don't want to be out of work for 6 months right? So stay there, suck it up until you find something else that's better and more what you want to do. Oh, don't forget, you have to actively seek out something better, it would just fall in your lap. Good luck. -

Array Well... I've had the kind of job you're describing before. Gratefully, I had other places to go that got me away. I was recently in a place where I hated, despised, loathed, and dreaded my job (well, my Masters). And I couldn't take it any longer. So I talked to my prof, and changed it to doing something I actually wanted to do, working with people I wanted to work with.
Things are... much nicer.
I think the thing is, if you hate it enough, you'll find a way to change it. Its just finding the place where you finally hit the "I can't do this any longer" button, and realize you're willing to change. -

Array I like my job. The girls I work with are great, my bosses are fun and completely flexable with any schedule you might have to keep (school, other jobs, etc). It's a great environment. "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." - George S. Patton -
I don't think there's anything worse than being in the private sector but serving the military. That was my last job. They often don't know what they really want, agree to a set of specifications only to renegade upon delivery.
They would refuse to accept delivery until changes are made to the product till it suits them and at NO COST to them. All this after they've signed a legally binding contract and we have met all the terms on the contract.
To make matters worse, I had a boss who would agree to do the above. That was it for me, after getting right royally SCREWED I quit. Am much happier now in my current job. In Deum Veritas, In Deum Caritas Similar Threads -
