    youngest "A" earned

The NBC Olympics web site indicated that Jason Rodgers was the youngest sabre fencer to earn an "A" at the age of 14 (actually, I had to do some more digging to get the age). That was after about three years of switching from foil to sabre (I didn't get the impression that he fenced foil very long or notably well).

My question is... What was the youngest age for an "A" in foil and epee? If possible, what was it for men and for women?

    Youngest male, perhaps...

There's at least one WS fencer who earned her "A" at 12.

One of the kids at our club, Graham Wicas, earned his A in epee at 14 in October 2003.

Another related question: who is the oldest person to earn (their first) A?

Take a look at the April Junior NAC for 2003

WS Youth-14 was an A2 event, which means at least 2 of the top 8 were A's going in--and Beca Ward who won earned hers if she didn't already have one. Since she also was in the Youth-12 I assume she was 12 or younger at the time (or just over??). A couple of the others in the Y-14 top 8 were also in the Y-12's, so one or more other A's might also have been 12 or younger.

Was it emily cross who was a world team member at age...13? in womens foil?

As for oldest A - Im not sure if he is the oldest, but Rick Estes at a recent vet NAC won his A in epee.
Im not sure how old he is or even what age group.

I would imagine for youngest "A" it would be younger for females than for males, due to their tendency to hit puberty sooner. I would guess that 13 would be some kind of lower limit for men, and 11 for women, but that's without any actual data.

Rick's in the 50+ category in the USFA veteran rankings.

If that is true, he would be REALLY embarrassing to fence. You see a nine year old you're about to fence, you help him hook in, you pat his shoulder and tell him winning isn't everything, the ref says fence, there's a fast but very short (4'8") blur, and one of the lights goes on. And it's not yours.

    That would suck.

I heard that Becca Ward won hers in WS when she was 12. Div II, Reno, 2002?

Don't ask me how I knew that. My brain is a touch fried from the exam I've got tomorrow.

Gerek Meinhardt earned his A in foil earlier this month (or was it last month)? Still 13.

As for old(est), Jeff Van Heusen won the Veteran NAC in Palm Springs last December and earned his first A. That's gotta be pretty old then. I think he can fence in the 50-59 age group.

Yeah, but if Donald Benge ever did that'd be a record NO one would beat!!!

It's possible, but highly unlikely, to get an A in Division II.

Yes--unless you have at least two people who earned their A's after qualifying for Div II and both finish in the top 8, but don't win, you can't. That was the dilemma of women's sabre before we had Division I competition--we didn't have any A's, so we couldn't earn any A's.
