Array Video clip: The smallest target of all I was checking out the 1988 Olympics, Men's Individual Epee Finals (FFootage), and found this funny action. (Fencer right is from New Zealand!) So nice to see a tip-tip touch on film, for once. 300k QuickTime movie. -

Array I wouldn't go as far as to say that it happens a lot...
Only have seen it 2 or 3 times.... With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter -

Array I've seen it happen quite a number of times. Usually when both fencers are baiting or in a lull. -

Array That's happened to me a few times before, and once my weapon went off but my opponent's didn't. According USFA rules I believe I should be awarded the touch for that I think, right guys? Jump on my sword while you can, I won't be as gentle! -
It's happened to me and least once.
Of course, in foil you can hit the tape as well. The good fencer, the bad fencer and me. -

t.66
1. In arriving at his judgement, the Referee will disregard hits which are registered as a result of actions:
— started before the word ‘Play’ or after the word ‘Halt’ (cf. t.18);
— caused by the meeting of the points of the épées or by a hit made on the ground where it is not insulated;
— or which are made on any object other than the opponent, including his equipment (cf. t.36, t.67/e).

Array I don't know what you are all talking about. That is parry 11, use it all the time. Jeeze... -

Array A men's epee bout I reffed in the top 16 at last year's Div 1A summer nationals had at least 2 tip-tip "touches." It might have been 3 in one bout - I can't remember for sure. I think it was Mr. Hill (from Austin) vs. Robert Reed. Sometimes, if one epeeist's spring is stiffer than the other's, and the tips hit just right, it can even be a one-light touch. Too bad it doesn't count as one. -
The NZ fencer is of course, Martin Brill. This was his second OG. -
