Array Euro 2004 Just saw the first two games at the Phoenix Landing, a bar in Cambridge MA. Greece beat Portugal deservedly 2-1, and Spain beat Russia 1-0. I thought Russia deserved a tie and Albeda deserved a red card for bodychecking Sychev late in the game, but such is life.
Anybody else here following the championships? -

Array As someone living in europe, it's quite hard not to bump into the Euro 2004...
Further more, it's a matter of having something usefull to do other then watching football...
And anyway, only the matches of The Netherlands are interesting... With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter -
Hi!
Sweden starts out winning 5-0, and England losing. If they repeat the French performance from South Korea/Japan 2002, maybe - just maybe - they get over the "Empire" thoughts.
Have a nice time!

Array Sweden played a very nice match, from what I saw. Some really beautiful goals.
The France-England match was a classic--both sides played really well and ran really hard. Zidane was fouled pretty badly a couple of times (I thought there should have been a yellow card the second time...), but it didn't phase him--his first goal, a free kick from about 22 meters was an absolute thing of beauty.
I was disappointed by Italy-Denmark--the Italians had no flare at all. The Danes worked hard and probably deserved to win, but it ended 0-0.
Germany-Holland tonight!

Array I had planned to see the game at the Phoenix Landing, in Cambridge, right around Central Square. The game started about 2.45, I got there at about 2.30 and the bar was already full. It had been full for about an hour in preparation for the England game. So there were a bunch of people outside going "well ****, what do we do?" I mentioned that this other bar might be showing the game, the Plough and Stars. So me and Laurent, this random French guy who accosted me because of my England jersey, start heading down Mass Ave. to find the game, and run into Angus and Sun (sp?), two England supporters, Angus with a wicked accent. Then we ran into David, another English guy. So as we're going down to the Plough and Stars, we stop in this other bar that might be showing it, and they tell us that the P&S isn't showing it, but that this bar in Davis Square might be. So we all walk back up Mass Ave and pile in Laurent's car (who drives like a Frenchman) and we got to Davis Square, to find that this bar wasn't showing it. They said this other bar up Holland Ave. in Teele Square was showing it though. So as we're walking up Holland Ave, we spot the game on in this other bar, Subar's. So we dash in there, right as David Beckham takes a free kick that Frank Lampard heads into the goal for the first strike of the game, 1-0 for England. England deserved to win that game, but such is life. They'll qualify for the quarterfinals anyway.
I do wish Denmark had beaten Italy, they deserved to, and I also wish them to do well in this tournement for Jesper Gronkjaer, one of my favorite players who would have lit up the tournement but for the death of his mother, so he stays home in Denmark with his family. -

Array For me it was fun lol
Hey Holland can just improve and they will I'm sure.
Germany can't really, that was all they have. -

Array That's what everybody always says... there's so much potential in the Dutch team....
but it never comes out... at least the last 6 years or so, the football of the Dutch team looks rather pitifull...
and I don't think that was the best of the German team either, they were a little cautious With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter -

Array I was disappointed they didn't play with Miroslav Klose, with the counterattacking style they were playing, he would have been so dangerous. They could have gotten another goal and killed off the Dutch. -

Array Mmhh Miroslav didn't play a good season here. But Rudi Völler will let him play in one of the next matches, I'm sure. Hopefully you are right and he kicks some nice goals. Keep your fingers crossed -

I would rather expect him to head some nice goals.
Anybody see the France/Croatia game? I expected Croatia to be the easiest team in the group. -

France scored first, in the first half, but the Croations scored twice in the second, on a penalty and a somewhat chaotic attack. French were probably a bit nervous until they got the equalizer again.
Croatia played very tough defense--the French never looked in synch.
