une salle d'armes à Paris

Any of you known much of the fencing clubs in Paris? I'll be living there for year starting this coming august, and will be needing to find my self some place to fence. I'm only in my second semester of fencing at a college currently but am very much involved in it.I can find my self a list longer than my arm of all the salles in Paris but not much info on any of them. Anyone happen to know any by experience/reputation?

merci beacoup!
-Erik

What weapon do you fence?

Do NOT go to the Racing Club. It's expensive, not very friendly, and you won't get to fence anyone or get any attention.

The Racing Club is overrated IMO. You'll see a lot of people who go there and train. You might even get to train with someone from the US (Justin Tausig in Epee), but none of the real famous French fencers who supposedly train at this club train there. They show up at the bar every once in a while, but they really train at the INSEP where you won't be able to get in, because it's the national training institute.

For Foil, I recommend the Tour D'Auvergne. Friendly, good atmosphere. If you see Marie, tell here I said Hi. Laurent Bel is from there, as well as his brother Christophe.

For Epee, In Paris intramuros, ASPTT Paris is really good, the Paris Universite Club is good too. If you are willing to take the Metro/RER to go there, the best epee club to go to would be AS St Gratien. They have some really good epee fencers there (Philippe Boisse is still training there, as well as his son Erik). There is also Frantz Philippe, a guy from NZ (Bloom I think), Benoit Janvier, etc...

For Sabre, most of the good clubs are in the Province. Les 3 Armes de Gisors can be reached by train from Paris in like one hour and the salle is a block away from the train station.
In Paris, you can try the US Metro which is the best sabre club in Paris. I don't know how the atmosphere at the club is though.

I only do foil right now but am interested in getting into epée. I was going to take foil though for atleast a year, since that seems to be the most reccomended course of training.

Are the clubs there generally one weapon orientated or do they generally use all three but have one of them more emphasized?

merci encore!

If you're interested into getting into epee, get into epee, right away.

The idea that you should start with foil and then move into another weapon is coming from an old era when foil was considered the training weapon.

Now, each weapon has a life of it's own, and if you want to fence one weapon, you should get into it right away. There's too much difference between foil and epee to be able to get anything other than basic footwork out of the foil and apply it to epee.

As far as the epee clubs mentionned below, the ASPTT has only epee. PUC might have some foil.

The Tour D'Auvergne has some epee fencers, but is mostly focused on foil.

In general, I'd say it's a bad idea to go to a foil club to fence epee and vice versa. The coach won't pay attention to you and you won't get too far this way.

yes yes, and snails in my belly. Well they do say you are what you eat....

I couldn't find much online about AS St Gratien save a telephone number and an organization name. About where are they located? Looking them up on a french search engine did turn up a list and placement of the 2001 National Circuit Windmills(?) of men's épée in which a vast majority of them were from ASPTT, Paris.

Thanks for the advice, I'll see if I can some how get into épée soon but my current class is all foil. I have been looking into a nearby salle instead the local junior college fencing program...
