    Adidas assymetrical fencing shoes

I went ahead and asked Adidas if they use synthetic or leather. They use both.

What's also amusing is that it shows the number of posts as 130 for both of your posts.

They do kind of look like *** , i prefer the traditional style, but the support looks to be better.

    Scarlet,
Yeah, it's no good - - - there not vegan!
However you can't be perfect all the time, so I got some . . . I know they are not vegan, but I don't think that any fencing shoe is, and the asymetrics are really nice.
    Did you go to nationals??
are you going to any of the NACs this year
    Have fun on Vacation
    Cheers.

    Car tyres aren't vegan? really?

I thought it was just rubber, steel and carbon.

    ?

    Steve.
    Learning something new every day.

P.s. Can a person survive on vegies alone? Isn't that a tad bland?
Believe me. I'm not knocking your principles, but as a carnivorous organism, I couldn't live without meat. Besides. I'm alergic to most vegetabls.
    I'll shut up now.

Steve...don't get me started on veganism.
But, one thing: trust me, you can live on an animal-free diet and survive fine (most people are limited to a VERY small variety of plant-based foods...when you look outside the box we live in, you find so much more than just carrots, lettuce and potatoes in the produce section). And just as you might be "allergic" to veggies, so to can you have negative, physical reactions to meat and dairy. My sister is ANYTHING but a veg and she can't touch pork and dairy AT ALL. Thus making her a pasta junkie. Also Steve, I have actually read an article that our digestive tract is actually nothing like a flesh-eating animal, but rather of a plant-eating one. The misconceptions placed on society by big companies is completely wrong. Did you know that the highest rate of osteoporois is in the two countries that consume to most dairy (the US and Sweden)?
Plus, the suffering that is caused in the meat and dairy industries is shameful, I want no part of that torture.

Steve, since you're in England aren't you a little concerned about Mad Cow? That's surprising to me if you aren't.

Latenight: obviously some things cannot be avoided (medications, tires, etc), but if there's an alternative, you better believe I'm going to try and find it and use it.

Ben: I'm not going to get them...just got a new, cheap pair of fencing shoes w/leather (better than buying from a big company, anyway). Man it pisses me off, though, I'd love to find a synthetic fencing shoe just like I did with my glove! Just bums me out that we need to rely on animal materials when there are plenty of synthetic and natural materials other than animal products to use.

Didn't go to nationals because I just started back the 00-01 season (had no goals set up). But I'll be going to both of the DivII/III NACs (at LEAST one, probably Utah), one of the DivI NACs and Nationals. Did you go to Nationals? Hope you did well.

BTW, there's this pretty good brand of power bar called "Boulder Bars." About five different bars, all vegan. Not too bad (they sit with ME fine at tourneys).

The tire thing just came to mind because I remember reading about it back when I was a hard-core veggie.

Torture shmorture ... It's FOOD. Those animals were meant to be killed and eaten by more predatory animals like us.

You want to feel bad about a living organism? Think about all those millions of blades of grass that the cows are slowly ripping out of the ground and chewing to death. (shudder) And the only cry for help they can utter is a post-mortem fart out the other end of the cow. THAT's shameful.

I like the feel of skin on my skin. It's so much more ... natural ... than some synthetic stuff that required a bunch of chemical mixing and polution-producing machinery to manufacture. And I thank Gawd every day that He gave primitive cultures the creativity to turn hide for protective uses.

    Bugaboo,

My guess is that Scarlet was not talking about the act of killing for food, but rather the conditions the animals are kept in while they are alive. The conditions most farm animals are kept in IS appalling. there are, obviously, exceptions, such as free range poultry, but that is not the norm.

Good points here...which is worse killing
animals (which of course, based on the number required to cloth and feed does require them being raised in unpleasant environments) for food and clothing, etc. or polluting the environment for making synthetics?

Thank you, Mike. This is exactly what I meant. So, yes, Bugaboo, in the act of killing a plant there IS pain. But with animals, in THIS PRESENT WORLD, they experience pain throughout their ENTIRE earthly existance. There is a big difference Bugaboo. A VERY BIG ONE.

Food is alive, plant OR animal, but the WAY it is treated are very different when it comes to plants and animals.

Also, Bugaboo, I don't care what your personal preference is to what you consume on a daily basis. But don't be such a jerk. I'm just giving the info I've done about investigating animal welfare and such, and also the affects that meat and dairy have on the human body.

I've been in a slaugther house, so I KNOW from experience what the animals experience.

Damn, don't be so fricken mean.

Mass production, Cutter, MASS Production of animal products is causing the animals to be treated as inanimate objects and not living things.

This is why I choose synthetic or natural materials derived from plants.

And if you ask me, if you're so concerned about the environment, why is the world eliminating all of it's forests and land for meat consumption? A good percentage of crops grown in this country is just to feed the animals. What a waste of land.

Until animals are treated like they aren't inanimate objects in a mass production world, I want nothing to do with it. Get the picture.

    Ugh.

Scarlet, I wasn't slamming the idea of treating animals better, I was commenting on it being a difficult issue to answer. Geez, lighten up a bit...this is supposed to be a fun site.

Sheesh. I wasn't any meaner than the original message. You share your perspective; I share mine ... AND I did it without accusing you of being a jerk, Scarlet. Be nice.

Viva la burgers! Down with synthetics! Put a cow on my hand or nothing at all!

Last thing I want to do is to upset anyone. I completely agree, that battery farming is wrong, cruel and shameful.

I merely wanted to know if the tyres were really non-vegan, or just a jokey remark. (sorry) But seriously, though, If I could bear a vegetative diet, I'd become a vegetarian. Just in agreement with the principles.

    Anyway.

    Mad cows?
Frankly, It doesn't bother me a teeny little bit. What DOES bother me a great deal, is this Foot and Mouth thing. I smell a government conspicacy here. Long story. Plus, the culls aren't neccesary. The virus doesn't affect humans, the meat is safe to eat, and it is only ever fatal to an infected animal if it's very weak. They normally recover in a week or so.

Sorry for TOTALLING the tread, bigtime. Also for sounding like I was putting your own beliefs down. I wasn't.

    Steve.

    Scarlet,
    Get-um, they work great.
As for the views on veggieness, to each there own . . .
I know that it's not great to use the leather, but I have yet find a good way around it for fencing shoes. As for gloves, I would like my gloves to be washable; skin is not (and besides that I find it icky). of course this may come out of the concern for my fellow fencers, I fence everyday, and my gear is none to pleasing to smell after about a week!
    Cheers,
    b.
