    Women's US National Epee Program

Women's US national epee program needs to be built.

    Give me your thoughts.

It doesn't already exist? My teammate gets emails because she's high on the pointslist about training camps, etc. What else would a program consist of?

I think the statement was implying the quality rather than the existance.... That the WE in the US needed to be built up, at least until we were better than, say, Canada. WE is the only (fencing) team event that the US will not be sending a team to Athens.

I was talking to a former member of the WE National Team. She complained that the team was factious at best, and the team had a hard time with the National Coach at the time.

I'm not familiar with the new WE coach, so I'm not really qualified to say much more. But I think we will get a decent program if we get decent leadership--both on the side of the athletes and the coaches.

I think the coach is excellent; the issue is a center for the team, a strong and deep list of WE fencers that are dedicated....not that it is entirely missing now, but it lacks a center like MS or MF or WF or even ME, and needs cohesiveness in terms of team, goals, developmental steps, budgeting, competition targets, etc.

With the new coach, who is more organized and inclusive to create a team environment, it is the first step in the right direction.

However, looking at the top 10 in WE, there are 3 NYC, 1 TX, 2 CA, 1 OR, 1 PA, 1 NH, and 1 DC. Going down to top 16, you get 1 NYC, 2 TX, 1 CA, 2 OR.

So, out of 16, we have 7 different states represented. This coach needs to be structured enough to follow a model much like the one Paul Soter took with men's épée -- to hold training camps in conjunction with NAC's, periodic bi-coastal training camps, training camps in conjunction with World Cups -- when you have fencers spaced far about the country you have to take advantage of the times in which fencers are congregated together.
