| Fencing in European Tournaments This topic sorta came up in another thread. I have a student who talks about bumming around Europe, fencing in clubs and tournaments. I think many of us have thought about this at one time or another. My question is this, what does it take to fence in European tournaments? Do you have to be a member of the USFA? Do you need their blessing? I'm not talking WC events here, just Opens in different countries. How would you find out about the tournaments anyway? Thanks in advance!

| I fenced in a tournament in Britain recently, and the only thing that I had to show was my USFA card. My guess is that you can use your membership card from one country to another country for opens and stuff. For WC's you need a FIE license, but I'm sure you already know that.

| While you might be able to fence in European tournaments with only a USFA license, I would recommend to either get an FIE license or get a license for the federation of the country you will be fencing in. There might be some competition organizer who doesn't recognize your license and won't let you fence.
The FIE license doesn't cost much in the grand scheme of things, if you factor in the cost of bumming around Europe it would be a minimal expense. Plus there might be insurance related coverage that you would get with it (not sure about it).

| http://www.nahouw.net is a good resource for finding European tournaments. I also agree with the above, spring for the FIE license, it's only, what, $25 more per year? Should save on hassles that'll be worth that much. FIE license you need to get through your country's governing body (USFA for Americans).

| A towel can double as a sleeping bag.... almost essential for the bumming/traveling life.... Take it from the guide...

| Okay, I think that I saw you and your brother warming up whilst I was trying to sort myself out (my fencing bag was at the end of a piste with two Americans warming up on it...)...
