    Reputation problems

Okay, someone gave me a negative rep for my song opinions in the eye of the tiger thread... I think this is getting out of hand. Besides that, they didnt even mention why. Can you please stand up and tell me why I got a negative reputation for something so neglible.

To be honest, I'd have to say the way you don't take anything seriously. That and sometimes you're overagressive. Calm down, it's only a forum. We're nothing more than avatars.

this is why reputation doesn't have any real meaning

wouldn't it suck if you weren't allowed to post anymore or something because someone didn't like your song preference?

I'd have to disagree noodle. A really bad rep could have people simply put you on the ignore list *gagcoughdreadyhackfoilcough*.

    well yeah, it could
but i could also put people on that list with positive rep
and not put people with negative rep on the list

rep is only an indicator and can change drastically on the whim of a single person who has enough reputation mod points or even a group of people.

like, for example, if bad reputation put you automatically on the ignore list of everyone else, a group of people could work hard to make everyone go negative reputation except for themselves. where would we be then?

I hate to say it, but I'm with the ryu-dude here(DFP). Rep doesn't impact much, but it's still a pain to see yourself pinged for no apparent reason. It makes you question the content of your posting, and when this questioning is unfounded, it gets annoying.
I think reputation should require an explanation, and perhaps be modded, and maybe even include the names of the people who leave the reputation. Just like the postings, the judgement on the postings should be fair, rational and leave a tracable impact. That way, people will be more likely to be much more unbiased and honest in their dealins with one another. That being said- I'm going to bed. Nighty-night

    Ping me..... I dare you......

Archer, if you go to your user CP it's there.

Have to say DFP, don't worry about it. I've had four reputation hits, one good, two from people who weren't eligible so it didn't count although they were good, and one bad which coincidentally also had to do with my musical taste (onanother thread.

As far as I can tell, 99% of people are "on a distinguished road"anyway so it makes little difference. Plus there's no list of the possibilities (that I can find anyway) soI've no idea what different ratings can be ascribed and how they compare to each other, what is low/high/average etc. Is "ona distinguished road" really good or just average? Is DFP's "infamous" tag as bad as it gets? A fun idea but badly managed so it's rather meaningless really.

It doesn't have to be. Just don't check your reputation. I don't.

the point of reputation is for people to anonymously show support of a post, or lack thereof. i'd never give points out if i knew my name was attached. the system is fine how it is. if you're getting hit by negative reputatinon, maybe you should reevaluate the content of your posts. try and change them up somehow because obviously some people aren't pleased about them (its not like one person can constantly give another person negatives. its a community effort to give multiple negative points). of course, though, i'm not saying you should change because people are giving you bad rep. but if you're going to get upset about it, the best solution at hand is to change yourself, not change the system.

no offense intended, ofc. and you shouldn't be worried if you're just getting pinged with the occasional negative. i have plenty of them.

People really ought not give rep points for comments in the water cooler.

    maybe.
say you only allow points to be given in general or the armoury. whats the difference between a good post there or in the wc?
whats the difference between a bad post there or in the wc?
in my eyes, not too much.

the problem seems to be the grief rating where people hit you with negative rep because they're pissed at you or something you said and that happens anywhere, really.

True, but I think that reputation should be linked more to fencing (and spreading knowledge thereof) rather than on political arguments and music preference.

yeah, that would be kind of nice.
but, then again, would you give positive, none, or negative points to someone who knew a lot about fencing and could answer obscure questions, but did so in a very mean-spirited manner? (i.e.: "if i were you i'd do blah blah blah, but then again it might not help you because you suck." or "any idiot knows that the distance blah blah blah, stupid", etc etc)

rep isn't just based on fencing knowledge, but personal mannerisms, helpfulness, kindness, etc. can't really say that it doesn't overflow into the wc, can you? i generally don't give points to posts based on opinion unless they're really good. because thats what opinions are. opinions. everyone has 'em, they're nothing special. don't warrant points on their own. i will, though, mod up posts in the wc that are factual and informative when one arises. besides, not like many people actually use the rep system anyway

A maybe better solution would be that people would have 3 different rep points - one each for fencing discussion, armoury, and water cooler. The points earned/deducted for a post would the only affect the total rep points for that specific forum.

    Have a nice time!

It means that somebody rated your response, but that person does not have enough "clout" for his vote to count either way (good or bad.) A grey box has no effect on your reputation status.
