A t-shirt would just get in the way of the wicking process. I am sure it doesn't generate any more stink that a damp t-shirt. I only fence on Mondays and Thursdays so I wash my uniform after every lesson.

Sorry if I sound defensive, just wanted to point out I am not a smelly person!!

Sweat doesn't actually smell, just when it's on your skin it provides a breeding ground for bacteria which break down the sweat into fatty acids, which is the actual cause of the smell.

Therefore if sweat is wicked away from your body, it can't be broken down and no odour is produced (other than pheremones, but they're no bad thing).

I however, do wear a t shirt under my plastron.

lol like 8 people asked me questions and to answer them, first off, yeah the sweat rises to the top of the shirt, you just take a towel and wipe it off. its like walking into a freezer for like 3 seconds. also, it isnt cheap, but it isnt expensive, they are like $25 per shirt which is more than a normal t-shirt but Nike has looser fitting ones for $40. I feel like a moron walking around wearing a skin tight shirt, and unless you have an issue with seeing yourself in tight clothes i would recommend it.

    2)
    1) the fit of the underarmor underwear is unusual for most people in a manner such that it doesn't really do what it does for the rest of the body.
    2) i personally don't really need the cash and prizes to feel brisk and cool, i'm fine with what i have.
    3) i don't like how they fit as underwear. they're not my type of underwear.
    4) they're just really expensive designer underwear, you're basically payin for the name, the functionality isn't really worth it.
    5) i don't usually feel hot from the waist down when i'm fencing. it really comes from the torso, which is where i wear mine.
    6) if you buy anything except for white, they're like a glowing beacon straight through your knickers.
    7) they don't give you much support if you get my meaning (if thats what you look for in underwear). i've heard of people using underarmour and regular underwear in order to feel comfortable. seems like a waste to me.

anyway thats my opinion on them
the rest of the underarmour is great, though, of course.

I discovered another unintended "feature" of Underarmor: I wear a longsleeved UA shirt, which allows my jacket to slide a bit over the slick material of the UA, causing the point to set a bit less when getting hit. I still get scored on the same, but with a tad less bruising, especially with those epee arm shots.

Under knickers... how about underwear? *shakes head and reads list again* I sometimes will wear a pair of bike shorts (as in, *hangs head in shame* spandex type) under my knickers if I know the venue has nowhere decent to change. I quickly, with face burning knowing what I look like in said shorts, change into my knickers.

I can sympathize with who ever said they don't wear anyhting but the underarm protector. With that many layers, one more just makes it worse sometimes. I'll fence in just a sports bra when its really really hot. And while some people have told me things like "thats not safe" (not sure where they get that idea) and "thats grose" (if your jacket is sweat soaked either way, and it all goes into the wash when you get home?)... its just a little less to overheat wearing.

Yeah, and when it's well over 100 degrees outside, you really don't feel bad about doing it.

There is a cool (pun intented) shirt that they make for Police to wear under bullet proof vests. Its called a cool-max. I wear one of those under my jacket and it really helps keep the heat down during battle. Its probably similar to the under armour stuff though.

Also lycra bike shorts under the knickers. But they do tend to creep up during deep lunges. (Who lunges deep anymore anyway)

you can order those shirts @

    Under Wear?

I have found that the NIKE baseball slider shorts have padding that covers both the side of your thighs, like Under Armour, but it wraps more across the front of the thighs to protect against those low parried off target shots.
They also have a built-in cup holder for for "All-in-one" use.
They are made from a "CoolMax" wicking type of material that moves the sweat from your skin to the outside of the fabric.
I never fence without them, I haven't had a case of "EPEE POX" on my thighs in ages. I was getting tired of people wondering what those little round bruises were

Under my jacket I wear a t-shirt, nothing fancy (I'm not a particularly advanced fencer nor do I go to a lot of competitions so I don't feel it's worth buying special sweat-wicking stuff, although I'm sure it's great for the more serious fencer). Then I wear my chest protector on topof that as it's one of the fake-plastic-boobs type, and I don't want bare plastic next to my skin plus the edges dig in a bit without. I just wear a normal bra (rather thana sports bra) under my t-shirt as I am modestly endowed and the chest protector is more than enough to keep those puppies in place.

I only wear underwear under my breeches, white of course as visible underwear is SUCH a fashion faux pas, sweetie! But I usually wear black tracksuit bottoms to fence in and breeches only for competitions (because I have to) - as I said above I'm not that serious a fencer and I'd feel like a fraud wearing all the fancy gear to my club... I fence foil and I've (touch wood) never had a painful hit to the leg.

I can understand why a man (or a woman with one of those chest protectors that's built into a little fabric top) would go without a t-shirt - as Myra said; it's all going to get sweaty and hopefully go straight in the wash afterwards, but I admit I don't want to know about it. Sorry to be age-ist, but I really hate to see at my club when a male fencer has no t-shirt on, they're waiting for a free piste and have unzipped their jacket a bit to cool off.. and you can see an expanse of slightly saggy middle-aged male chest, possibly besprinkled with grey chest hair. I apologise to anyone with grey chest hair, but I just think it should be kept under wraps. Especially if there's a gold chain nestling in it.

Interestingly enough, I did a slang search, and puppies actually is listed as referring to those of the large variety.

Under the breeches I wear armour plated underpants! Seriously. You can get 800N undershorts from Allstar. A friend of mine recommended them, so I went out and got my own. They're comfy and have a pouch for a box.
