Did you fence epee at NAS Sectionals?

If you did, I would really appreciate it if you could double check your bag to make sure you didn't pick up a couple of epees that don't belong to you, as two of mine went missing during one of my bouts.

they have BF White FIE blades and Uhlmann size 3 grips. one of them has a grey bell pad, and definitely has my name on the bell ("Eskin"), the other one has a blue bell pad, and is new, so may not have the name on the bell.

Thanks for any help, and please pass this on to anybody you know who fenced there, but might not check these boards.

Fencing will always be a "for love of the game" sport.

Nice result! I assume then that Gamals lessons helped some?

    Apparently.

though, for the past month, I've been fencing exclusively sabre, so go figure.

the event was also significantly weaker than usual, thanks to being located in Rochester.

    Full Top Eight:
    1. Aleks Ulanovskiy
    2. Ian MacEachern
    3. Lubo Kalpaktchiv
    4. Bradley Baker
    5. Michael Eskin
    6. Justin Meehan
    7. Michael Dreyfus
    8. Erik Hoopes

Yeah, Rochestor has crappy fencing. heh.

And I think you fencing sabre for a month and then placing 5th at regionals just means Gamals lessons made you such a beast that you can still fence epee even after fencing sabre.

    Results from the tournament

    Hey all,

Attached is a ZIP file with as much information as you could possibly want from NAS Sr. Sectionals.

let me know if I missed anything/can shed some more light on anything.

and no Mike, I still don't know where your epees are

yep (though Ariana's lessons help tempo a lot, too).

the reverse isn't yet true, though. I fenced epee for one frickin' day, and at practice last night, I was back to pulling epee tricks instead of actual sabre actions.

btw, before anybody jumps all over me OR dawg, please recognize the thick irony in his statement about the quality of Rochester's fencing.

The reality is that sectionals in WNY are weaker because fewer people (especially the autoquals, i.e. the best) are willing to make the trip.

No no, I'm piling on...how the heck can they do footwork after eating those garbage plates?

For epee/sabre that seemed true. In WF, it was true, although the absence of "the best" was notable considering they all live about 10 mins away.

MF was rough -- there were fewer competitors than in previous years, but it felt much stronger than in past years; I only got one easy bout in my pool, down from 2-3 last year, and I was in one of the lucky pools. (One of my students got the Fisher/Radu pool...oops!) My C03 put me 2/3 of the way down the initial seeding.

    Darius,

you're quite right. as the pools were being spit out of the computer i kind of cringed/chuckled while reading them. there were some fun ones there.

I've never heard of Alexander Ulanovskiy, although seeing as he basically beat the 3 best fencers there in a row (Meehan, Kalpatchiev and Macheachern) apparantly he's good, eh?

We have a few Russian doc types that work at Strong Hospital and fence for UR, and one told me that Ulanovskiy was the Soviet national champion back in the early 80s. He's listed as a coach on Candlewood's page.

I was too busy doing local host stuff to see it, but apparently the final between him and MacEachern was very interesting.

ulanovskiy is apparantly in his 50s-ish, I hear he coaches/coached at the NYAC, is one of the coaches for candlewood, and has been sectional champ at least once before (2000, or 01).

ulanovskiy is just getting back into fencing after about 3 or 4 years away from the sport. he was in a car accident and really mangled his knee (he had to take an injury timeout during the gold to have it worked on by the trainers). he won the NAS epee in 99 or 00 right before his car accident where he thoroughly trounced the field (destroyed taro something like 15-5 in the final bout).

    so yes... ulanovskiy doesn't suck.

Best DE bout in the men's epee had to be ulanovskiy against kalpatchiev. Score ended up being 15-14 with two seconds remaining. The bout with Macearphen was quite interesting only because of the general chaos (10 minute break from injury, big bends in the epees, invoking the passivity rule) and a lot of tension and arguing. I have to admit it was interesting to watch ulanovskiy who seemed to have sprained something around the sixth point, hoping around on one foot fencing....

As someone above said, bouts with MacEchern are always interesting. They tend to involve a lot of yelling.

Whenever I fenced him scholastically, I wore an extra right sock. A pox upon his toe-touches.

he's now at FAW. they're compiling quite a list of coaches: Romankov, Slava, Ulanovskiy, Joe Fisher.

he was showing off and exagerating the knee issue to screw with Ian.
