    Sex

I think the result of this poll would be very interesting, in light of the recent discussions.

not exactly-- from what i've gathered....

gender is for how you see yourself,
sex is for your body parts.

I'm going to Smith next year, the queen of all women's schools, which happens to have quite a few gender studies majors. One of my friends minored in gender studies at NYU. From what I remember of her telling me is that:

most people treat them as interchangable. for most uses, they are interchangable. For everyone that's never had a sex change operation, never seen themselves "trapped" in a body with the wrong sexual organs, etc---

for most people, the answer to "sex" and "gender" in the "are you male or female" sense is always the same.

if anyone on here has any of these issues, they'll probably click other.

but generally, when a separation is needed, "gender" is how one perceives ones sexual identity, and sex is the outside body parts.

yes, this is true and when used in context, people would understand what it means.
but for the purposes of this little poll, gender == sex == the topic at hand

As one of the older posters on this board with feminist tendencies the number of males VS female is not surprising.
As George Carlin says: "Men are stupid and women are crazy."
There is an additional category for male fencers. I think Myrdins should name it.
Fencers are only as strong as all their parts, as their group or society. If you males think that women are not up to your worth and do not respect them as athletes, no one else will either.
    Think about it.

i'd probably be forced to go with whats on the birth certificate if the issue came to a point where the bc needed to deal with it.
there's more of a difference between the sexes than the reproductive organs themselves. a sex change operation wouldn't get rid of the other biological differences that you can't just cut away.

My feelings are that we should call gender, gender, gender is an adjective, sex is a verb.

You have ot be careful here. Generally the operation is also accompanied by a hormone suppliment. Sometimes the hormones are given in the absense or even as a substitute to a sex change operation. Those hormones have an effect on most every aspect of the body including both the brain and bone structure. To argue that a person is or is not still the same gender/sex as is indicated on the birth certificate would take far more knowledge of the topic that most of us have.

I did know a transgendered fencer. We were fortunate enough that all events in the area were mixed and so it was not an issue, though I would always sweat for the bout committee when we'd go to events that were not pre-assigned as segregated.
You have two opponents, the one standing on the strip, and the one standing to the side of it.

I have thought about it. I have come to the conclusion that you do not have the inclination to name that category, and expect Myrdins to do the dirty work.

On your last line I disagree. It, in essence, means that if a bunch of of chauvinists disrespect women fencers as a group, then no one will respect them. For someone who self-identifies as a woman with feminist tendencies, I must say that your opinion of feminsts in general is surprising.

    Have a nice time!

The two terms are not synonymous, at least not in connotation. Few of us would disagree with the saying "Sex sells"; "Gender sells" is far more dubious...

Entitle a thread "Sex" and many are going to interpret it as a reference to the ACT of sex. The misapprehension would not occur with "gender".

Whatever the person's ID (license) says. It is not up to me to decide, and since I know that decision has been made by others elsewhere, I'll just go with their decision.
