    White Tip Tape

Out of curiosity, is there a reason white tip tape is rarely used?

Some believe (and cite studies to back them up) that brightly colored tip tape speeds up your opponent's reaction time because he or she can see the tip coming.

Others just think it looks obnoxious. I'm with them; I prefer neon yellow.

Or, there may be a rule somewhere that forbids white tip tape, though I honestly don't believe there is.

Another point of view is that its more important for the Ref to see your tip clearly to determine the clarity of your action. The blurred trail that is left by the persistance of vision effect can be crucial to the referee's perception of an action that is otherwise too fast to see. The opponent isn't fencing against the tip - he's fencing against the whole person and the position of the entire weapon, arm, and body. If your actions are cued by the tip - its probably too late...

That is intresting. I'll have to remember that bit the next time somebody asks this particular question.

I wonder if you're allowed to do white and black stripes. Stripes supposedly throw off depth perception...

i use white tip tape and no one has ever said anything and my coach is the certified referee trainer for the division so it is legal.
