question

i got the foil actions cd (yeah, great one, i know) and i notice that the earlier pics had the light of the fencer recieving the touch go off whereas for the more recent pics the convention was switched, i.e. the light of the person who scored went off. when this did change take place and why?? just curious.

Not sure of the exact date, but I think it was around 1999.

As I recall it, it was an action towards getting fencing to be more "spectatorfriendly" and easier to understand to the non-fencing audience (Ha, what audience?!).

Ie. they would easier understand which fencer scored the point if that fencers light came on, instead of the light showing where the touch landed.

It was after I got to West Point. I think it was my yearling year. It must have been the 2001-2002 season.

I believe that the change was officially approved in 2000 (the last time the FIE rules were officially revised).

Changing hte lights ment that they finally caught up with changes to scoring that occured almost twenty years earlier when scoring shifted from touches recieved (low score wins) to touches scored (high score wins).
