Array Yes, it was pretty dull without a pointless debate! Welcome back, Inq.
Inq: Hard to say, but I think the tendency has gotten worse. I don't think that JFK (won a Pulitzer while a Senator, right?) or Dick Nixon "played dumb". "In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice, theory and practice are different." -

If I remeber right, it's been a while, Kennedy only contributed a few thoughts to Ted Sorensen, who really wrote Profiles in Courage.
Sorensen denied it, of course, but no one ever found any evidence of Kennedy actually authoring the book. Only a few notes and no one ever produced a Kennedy draft of the book.
All this was investigated by Clark Clifford after someone accused Kennedy of having it ghostwritten for him. "Let him live upon what belongs to him without wronging others, and accommodate his expense to his revenue."

Array For all I know that could be the case, though it strikes me that JFK had the literary skills needed for the task. I think McCain's recent book demonstrates that's it's possible that a Senator could actually do the job! The point though, is that writing such a book today could have had him labelled an "egghead" and would be a liability... Array And somewhere along the line you all got lost in your little points and now a discussion about Rumfeld is talking about whether it's good or bad to act dumb when running for office... -

Array No, you really don't, not when it bogs down like this. -

Array And sometimes it's not a drift - it's a HIJACK! Arrgggh, ye scurvy dogs, the thread pirates have taken your thread away! (sorry for the outburst, I'll behave now) "In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice, theory and practice are different." -

No, but they were at pains not to be too closely associated with the cerebral classes in the eyes of the electorate, either. ( How far back does that stupid "Look-I'm-rolling-up-my-sleeves-I-understand-the-working-man" thing go, for instance? ) -

Depends on the book, I daresay. Rush Limbaugh has brought forth books, but who considers him an intellectual? -

At least as far as i'm concerned, Rush has never written anything which comes CLOSE to the level of Profiles in Courage. -

Hmmm. balance doesn't look too good here. Well, in Swedish he is running 0-3, so you are possibly more right than you thought.
Have a nice time!

On the bright side, I have gone back to my home town as a grown-up, and seen some of my former tormentors piss-drunk (and I mean that literally) in the middle of the day. Their lifes are wrecked, and quite deservedly so.

Peter Gustafsson Mmm, yes, hazing. I remember having my head bashed against a tetherball pole in elementary school... -

Perhaps you should talk about this in the "so much anger..." thread.
