Whatever the result, there seems to be the need from a national policy, or at least a regional one. The rating system is inconsistant enough without this added factor thrown in.

There can be no ratings inflation at that level in my opinion as Es and Ds just don't mean that much in the grand scheme of things. You could give everyone in your division an E and your open tourneys would be no different than if they were all Unrated.

that's true.....but i have seen a situation in which those Ds and Es have kept fencing each other and have becomes Cs and Bs...they aren't any better than they were when they were "E"s. But since they all keep fencing each other thier ratings keep going up.....and that DOES make a difference in the grand scheme.

To save you the trouble of going back and reading, I would like to restate that it took me SIX YEARS to get my E. If you somehow get a beginer class of 30 fencers to all show up for a tourny on one day, say after a SIX WEEK introductory class, then you produce a "cross section of (beginer) abilities" of SIX beginer fencers ranked the same as me, and TWO beginer fencers ranked higher than me. Yet I could stomp them all, and they should not eliminate a DESERVED E or D from my pool. Do you see the problem here? My Coach wouldn't even let you fence anything but a beginer's tournament (read: no ratings earned) untill you fenced in the club for a year. I thought all Coaches had that kind of class.

getting people into div 1 schools doesn't phase them. i need something to tell them!
