Looking for Friendship I am in North Carolina and looking for friendship from fencers that are involved in the sport of modern fencing. They can fence sabre, foil and épeé. I guess it is because I am overweight and lonely and would like to become involved in the sport somehow.
I welcome Email from anybody on fencing.net. -

Array Hi to you from sunny Southern California from another overweight fencer. What weapon do you fence? I'm a foilista. "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never . . . never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense." Churchill, 1941 -
Looking For Friend I probably should clarify myself and say I do not fence at this time. While it is something I have considered, I know from experience that I tend to shy away from sports where body imagery can become an issue. I realize the feeling in unhealthy and I should find someone to teach me.
One thing I have considered is trying to meet up with a man or a woman who has the interests in competition and instructing. There have been times when I have considered finding someone who has interest in going into business. I have even considered finding me single and unattached fencers.
Fencing is a great sport and activity. I can see by the few events I have attended. I have been to the NYC World Fencing Championships and the USFA Nationals in Greenville, SC. I do enjoy seeing the fencers fence foil, épée, and sabre on the piste.
There is also something about the uniforms. Maybe it is the fencing uniforms are totally different from the uniforms worn for football, basketball, baseball, soccer and ice hockey, to name a few. -

Array Hi, fencing is fun (with or wothout weight problems ) and you should give it a shot!!! I'm sure you would find a fencing club in your town. For me it's always a pleasure to be part of my club and to talk to people who have the same sport interests.
Good luck and have fun! -

Array There's a body image in fencing? Let me be the first to tell you...NO WAY! Please, don't let that keep you away from our fair sport. You'll find that people of all shapes, sizes, colors, etc. fence & most are terrific people who are incredibly supportive.

I guess I have to agree with everyone else here. You should try fencing your self. There are plenty of excellent fencers out there who may not be in the best physical shape, and many fencers will be quite friendly.
Also, fencing may help you to get in better shape. Couldn't hurt, and you might just have fun doing it. -

Array Try It! You'll Like It! tpowell, I watched the fencing class at my University's rec center with envy for a year or so, all the while thinking I was too old (late 40's), too slow, too heavy, yada, yada, yada, to do it. (I'm a staff member at the University of California at Irvine and all the fencers in the class were lithe, active undergraduate types.) Then I decided to give it a shot. That was in September 2000.
Know what happened?
I'm even older now (50), still slow (maybe a step or two faster), still too heavy (maybe a pound or two), and boy do I love fencing!!! Have also made friends of some of those lithe, active undergrads.
You might want to take the chance. I can guarantee a great, fun workout. "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never . . . never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense." Churchill, 1941
