Tense at qualifiers: Sectional champs as expected?

General observations and opinions, please: At your senior sectional championship events (for I-A qualification at Nationals), did you see a lot of suprising upsets in the final results? No need to name names, please. I'm just curious about how some of the top regional fencers react when they're under pressure to reach a major goal.

Our final tally in epee shows a couple of Cs and an E in the top eight (winning better ratings now, of course). They performed well; obviously, the As and Bs less so. ... No excuses for slippery floors, bad weather, blind refs. When the chips are down, you either produce or step aside.

At least in sabre, the past few years at our sectionals have gone pretty much as expected.
This years haven't happened yet(this weekend, rochester NY) and it'll be interesting to see how things go. Most of the stronger sabre fencers are more this way than that (rochester is ~8 or so? hour drive) so it'll be interesting to see who makes the drive.
I know at least last years silver medalist will be in attendance.

In sabre, the Mid-Atlantic Sectionals were about what I expected, both in men's and women's. I called the gold medal bout in the women's before it started (between the 2nd and 3rd seed, the first seed being an aged A in more ways than one).

Do you know where I could find the results of the Mid-Atlantic sectionals? I had to skip this year due to an injury.

However, in the M-A men's epee, there were quite a few upsets. Although the eventual winner wasn't that much of a surprise, along the way, some that were expected in the final eight never got there.

Yes, there were a few upsets.

The silver medalist was a bit of a surprise. And he only lost to JD 13-15. It partly my fault, but oh well.

They used the NAC format for the Mid-Atlantic Sectionals. That may have had an influence on what happened this weekend.

Isaac, I hope you didn't break any more epees! Even though I don't know anyone out there (except I met Isaac once), you have to give Browngold kudos for finishing high... especially for a 'D' fencer.

Luke's not a "D" anymore! The kid has been on the verge of a breakthrough for a few months now and has been doing some "giant slaying" during that period.

He's a great kid and one of the most patient young epeeists I've ever seen. More cerebral than physical.

Katsoff looked a little baffled by Luke's style at first, but towards the end, seemd to be in control. Nonetheless, he was definitely not taking Luke too lightly.

BTW, I love what the organizers did to my name: Not only did they make me a female, but they mangled my last name beyond recognition. Luckily, it's hidden in the middle of the rankings.

I assume that you are Mr. Erbele? You made it farther than most of the other A's. I was surprised at O'Dowd and young Wicas not making the finals, they looked pretty sharp earlier in the day.

Experience helped me with that. From NACs, I knew how to conserve energy in the first round so I had something left for the intensity of the second pool. The air was extremely humid and fairly warm (I lost five pounds of water weight even though I was drinking the whole time), but I felt great until I got home and sat down, so I figure I've been training right.

It wasn't as bad as the MAS in West Virginia a few back, where it was in the 90's and the third-place bout in the WS was fenced with rock-paper-scissors because neither fencer wanted to move.

i fenced horrible at sectionals. was a little off, but that is besides the point. I was surprised how well the u-19 fencers did at senior sectionals for the most part. i had more to say but i forget

It was the gender change that hurt the most. (maybe this should move the "cup" thread)

Hey Artisan,

Thanks for "fixing" me.

Now, if you could only improve the number in front of my name...

Eh, I broke two just before Nationals, and then I got an FL blade, which seems to be doing a little better than my BF Blues.

I do have to give Browngold kudos. His timing and his tip were on.

We've met?

I may have taken him a little lightly.

He did fence well. He would have gotten an A, too, if we had just had one more B show up. I hope he continues to do well, to fill out his newly earned rating.

My secret identity has been revealed!! I made it pretty far, but I was a little frustrated that I didn't make it further.

O'Dowd was knocked out, thanks to one of my teammates. Wicas was knocked out because JD barely made it out of the 2nd round of pools.

--
Peach--

I think the experience helped, but a lot of the fencers there haven't done anything like that before. The second round of pools and the DE's were a little random.
