Fencing in advertising

With the ongoing discussion of fencing footwear and advertising on uniforms, I thought it interesting that fencers are the background for a shoe ad in the Outside magazine 2004 Buyers Guide. Keen Footwear ( a maker of protective and traction sandals with a history in sailing footwear) uses a photo of a touch to a face mask to make their point that proper protective gear is important...... Oddly they don't make fencing shoes! Anyone seeing fencing used as a graphic and visual backdrop for other products?

This is not the same thing, but 'Night Court' in the judges office had a mask, but I don't know if anything was ever said during the show about it.

They use fencing masks for the drones in Austin Powers 2 on the Moon base.

Andie McDowell poses in fencing gear, with weapon, for some beauty preparation ad on TV. Naturally she's not wearing a mask--why cover up the results? The idea is that this product "defends" against aging--to which I respond, "Not with that crappy en garde it doesn't!"

One of my first equipment sales was to the show "She Spies" A mask, jacket and one of each weapon...used as set dressing.

And for those who may have seen drum corps...in 1996 the Carolina Crown had a girl in the color guard who was a fencer,,at one point inthe show a portion of the guard was dressed up with what looked like fencingmasks froma distance (they weren;t tho...they'd be too heavy do do guard work)

some lawyer/insurance commercial with these 2 guys fencing in some stone hallway talking about how there insurance covers them. Obviously the guy who doesn't have the insurance that the commercial is selling, loses. I find it amusing that they are both fencing epee, but the guy (I think) who is talking about the insurance company, is wearing a sabre helmet.

I recently caught a glimpse of a commercial for a mutual fund company--a very vigorous and "staged" fencing bout (epee if I recall) with the fencers talking about the benefits of the fund with the end line being something like "my point exactly" as he makes the final touch.

yeah! I think that is the one I was talking about. Was it black and white and the company's logo was a fencer en garde?

Verizon tried to sell us "cutting edge" DSL service with two fencers in the background and a bunch of "slashes" in the page.

Yeah, I don't think foils make jagged Zorro cuts.

I just saw an ad in one of the medical magazines for a hepatitis medicine with a woman lunging with a foil and wearing and all white unmarked outfit. I will try to scan it.

Let's give some credit to Disney.....I can think of 2 movies off the top of my head that show fencing for a few seconds....

In "Finding Nemo" there are two swordfish talking while they fence, one of them stops and says: "Nice parry ol' chap!" (Silly, but it's still fencing.)

In "Tarzan" Jane shows Tarzan pictures of things in the civilized world, and a fencer is one of them.

It's not much, but at least it's something....

Phoenix, I think we are talking about the same commercial. I love how it totally perpetuates the completely outdated stereotype of fencers as snobby rich white guys. *sigh*
(Plus, the commercial makes it look like they're fencing in a stone dungeon in the middle of the night.)

My Salle has a couple of old magazine ads that show fencing but are advertising none fencing related products.

On a movie note: In the upcomming "Shrek 2" puss in boots weilds a foil. Puss in boots is voice by Antonio Banderas who coinidentally played Zorro in "The Mask of Zorro"
I watch too many movies... what am I saying! NO I DON'T!!

I think more important than fencing in advertising would be advertising in fencing.

not to mention Richie Rich, the remake of The Parent Trap, the recently released The Girl Next Door, and many, many others.

It should also be noted that some of the olympic ads I've seen prominantly feature a foilist. Mabey they'll stop thinking about cutting us now.

OOO! And you can see an epeeist in the powerade commerical in the bootle! I hope they squeeze him out soon . That would be a good commerical.

And that UK BMW commerical is pretty sick.
