| help with new medal / trophy design I have complained for years to the people at Crown Awards that their medals and trophies for fencing are hopelessly out of style. They recently took my complaint seriously and asked for some ideas for a new medal and a trophy topper. I would like your suggestions on a good design that they can use, that represents fencing in a more realistic and modern way. I won't benefit from it at all, except that we would have an alternative source of awards that we like.
For the trophy topper, I always thought that just the weapon would be effective. |

| For the medals you could always suggest that they have a pair of fencers giving their salute to each other, it would show the good sportsmanship, and the courtesy of fencers to each other....
And for the trophies... humm....they could always just put a fencing mask on top of it, with like whatever weapon it was. |

| I agree. I think a fencer saluting with the appropriate weapon would make the idea trophy. It would work well for medals too. Also, a fencer on guard with the appropriate weapon would make for a good trophy. Or a fencer lunging with the appropriate weapon.

| The Pacific Coast Section has a club trophy for the Junior PCC's designed by Buzz Hurst that uses the elements that Andromeda mentioned. I wish it had a picture to show you.
Basically, it is a mask, with an Epee, Foil and Sabre crossed of the top. For a trophy it would probably be best for the blades to end in the shape of a pyramid rather than crossing.
Also as an aside, the design for the trophys for the Long Beach Invitational has been approved. They will be similar to last year in size, but they will be black slate, which will be a little lighter, but still have a definite weight. So if you are planning on winning and you are flying, don't take your bags to the maximum when you come.

| I like the ideas listed here so far...
The problem is not the metal, I think the problem is that there is only one and it get's bored after about the thrid metal you win that looks alike.
We are in the process of making a special engraved metal for the High Plains Open on June 5th and 6th. I cannot wait to see what the metals look like. |

| Paint the lames on the fencers rainbow colors, since everyone seems so enthralled with eye-hurting color these days. That'l make for an ever-so-tasteful trophy or medal... |

| I think a fencer with arm totally bent and in the middle of a flick lunge would be really good..... because after all, if you won this trophy, you were definitly prepared... and preparation is what fencing is all about.
Cheers,
Carl

| Maybe one with some guy putting the sword in the other opponent! THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!!!!!
OR... just go with what everyone else said. the Salute and engarde are ok. Or just do a fleche for like foil and epee and some other attack for sabre. Attacks I think are kool on medals.
Here is a pic of a medal. Maybe u can get some Ideas

| Or you can do what we did for our first event and custom design the medal and have the die built for less than 200.00 This way you will always have this one medal to use as your annual event and no other club will have it.
Here is ours. Crimson Blade Open
What is cool about this is the large white areas in the middle are hollow so you can see through the medal and it gives it a bit of character instead of just another cast or stamped medal.
Dinn Bros is who we ordered ours through and they had great customer service. Turn around was a bit slow and it took a little over two months to get them in.
If any of you need some ideas, I have lots of original artwork that I was using before I came up with the final design. |

| This company has a few options. http://trophycentral.com/2recmed.html
They have a couple of nice looking medals with fencing images.
They also have engravable medals, that are customizable.
Also, they have "custom Medals" with a photo insert, so you can provide color artwork. |

Do they charge a setup fee? I would think that would make the medals for a single event kind of expensive. |

| The die was 195 then we buy the medals just like normal with no set up fee. So when we need them, they run and ship out what we need. Plus they can engrave them if we need them to or we can have them engraved locally.
One thing we do is order what we will need over the corse of a year and then engrave them here instead of having them done at the factory.
We will use this same medal for beginner tournaments that we have about 6 of each year. Then it's also used for out one major division tournament. So we will go through about 36-40 each year.
We wil do other things (other trophies) for our other division events that we plan to host this next year. |
