Array Germany I'm going to be spending next year in Germany (Berlin) and I was wondering if any of you have any advice/ suggestions for me;involving fencing, art and getting work.
Background info: I'm learning the language between now and September, I'm about 18 years old, and I have a background in tutoring and building (shopwork mainly). I won't be all that great with the language, but I'll definately pick up on it quickly when I'm there. I have money for about 5 month's time, and I'd like to work throughout, so I can stay about a year or so. If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time~Proust

Array I can tell ya where to tour. That wont help your money though "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." - George S. Patton -

Array Remember: the verb is always second, unless it's a question. Extra verbs are at the end. -

Array I spent some time in the germany. perņ non parla una parola del tedesco dopo 6 mesi. The question of working is difficult because it depends upon what type of visto ( I do not know the word in english for Il visto, Help me please). The bsic point is that I think only with a visto for students, you are not allowed to work. but if you have a nother type you can. you said that you were 18 years old therefore I am assuming that you are coming to Germany like a student. but it depends on from where you are coming. From you england or another part of the old eu you don't need a visto. but if you8 come from the un ited states the australia or one of the new countries in the eu. you need to ceom to germany with a work contract to work, but if you coem from the new eu for staying (restare)?? you do need a visto. but if you come from the america or from the australia, you need a visto for simply restare. I am sorry bvut my english is not that good. But the germay I need to say is very exsepnsive. 1 euro a bottle of water. when one thing costed 1 mark be fore the euro came, now costs 2, or 1 euro. best of luck scarphe -

Array Hi, I can tell you that you choosed the coolest city here in Germany. Berlin is great and you will love it. People are very open there and it's very "multi-kulti" (international). You won't have problems to talk to people in english. Nearly everybody (of the younger generation) speaks it more or less fluently. Do you have a visa for Germany? And you need a working-license. When you have all that you should find a job, if you are flexible. The German bureaucracy isn't easy to handle, so you need patience.
For students it's quite common to live in a flat-sharing community. It's not so expensive and you will get to know lot's of people there. Because of the strong, euro life won't be inexpensive for you..
Okay, I wish you luck and a great time -

Array How does one go about getting the permits necessary to work in Germany? I wouldn't be going as a student, I'm doing it so I can take a year off before going to a university. If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time~Proust

Array All you need to know in German is:
"Ich bin Auslander."
And they'll probably understand. -

Array Argh...back in high-school German, we had to learn the song "Ich bin Auslander und spreche nicht gut Deutsch", to the tune of "She'll be comin' round the mountain." Made it so damned hard to say it in a normal tone... -

Array lol
We had to learn that three pointed hat song. "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." - George S. Patton -

Array OMG Soldier I had that exact same song.
"Ich bin Auslander und spreche nicht gut Deutsch."
But our class was sadistic and we were obsessed with the phrase "Ja toll". So we put "Ja toll" for every "Yee-haw!" in the song. Basically after every sentence we all shouted out JA TOLL! -

Array Cant' say I'm familiar with Toll, what is it? "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." - George S. Patton -

If you want something that'll really throw you, try having pretty good Hoch-Deutsch, and then run into Austrian dialect out in the boonies. "I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by."
