Can I enter official tournaments (USFA) if I am not a member of an official USFA club? and please fill me in as to how the rankings etc work... | If you have your FIE license, you don't even have to join the USFA -- your FIE license will have reciprocity. When the tournament organizer asks for a club affiliation, you just show your FIE license and give the country (HUN) that authorized your FIE license. Of course, if you are not maintaining your Hungarian Federation membership and your FIE license through them, then you will have to get a USFA membership, and on the membership application, just declare yourself as unattached.
The only USFA sanctioned events in which you cannot compete are those which are qualifiers for National Championships, unless, of course, you have permanent resident status (I think that permanent residents are eligible while resident aliens are not eligible).
If you enter a local or regional competition, you will be classified as a U until you earn a classification under our system; if you enter a NAC, then the USFA, at their discretion, may classify you for the seeding of that particular tournament based upon any past results that you show them. |

Bozek got me into fencing He lives in Hungary right now (works with the US Embassy, commerce or somesuch deal). Runs a small club in which I am a member... What an awsome guy. |

here's something you may not know about Joe: he didn't fence. His niece came to him and said she wanted to fence, so he went to the library, read up on it, and taught his niece. she was his first olympian. given the differences between books and reality, I'm guessing that the real secret to his success was the ability to adjust his coaching.

Segey Isayenko, from the ukraine currently attending st. johns university in new york(and also a really nice guy if I remember correctly) entered a tournament in connecticut last year as his first USFA tournament. Went from a U to a B (I think there weren't enough As in the top 8 to make it an A tournament)
So, yup - it's possible.
Out of curiousity, handartista, what is your fencing background? Weapon, experience etc? | There were enough A's (Oleg Stetsiv took 2nd, I took 3rd). There weren't enough B's (the 2 B's hit each other in the rd of 16).

I think the club technically has a $50/year membership fee that one is expected to pay if attending fairly regularly. But yeah, basically free.

My background is I have been fencing at a club here in Hungary "Tanner City East" for about a year and half... Exlusively Epee... Not much expereince therefor, but I practice a lot, so Im not totally newb-e-ish. |

| It COULD go up to an A rating....It all depends on the number of fencers and thier ratings. Here is a chart that shows how it works. http://nadi.calpoly.edu/~fencing/Doc...sfa/class.html
As you can see, at any USFA tournament with 15 or more fencers and at least 2 A's & 2 B's & 2 C's (or higher) competing you could get your A rating. |
