| Collegiate Club Nationals Hi all,
As an FYI there's a collegiate club national championship being put together starting next year. Open to any US college club team (non-varsity). Entry will be by squad with prizes for top squads, top 3 (or possibly 6) weapon teams, and an individual finals with prizes for the top individuals.
Entry fees are still TBD.
The first year the competition will be held at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL the weekend of April 4-5th, 2003. In future years we expect the competition to be moved around, probably to the Northeast for the second year.
For further information, or if you want to make sure that your club is included in mailings about the competition, please either pm me, email me at brad@sandboxscribe.com, or email Bruce Capin, the Florida coach at flpanther10@hotmail.com. Bruce is lead organizer for the event, at least for this first year.
Clubs which are currently involved are:
U of Florida
UMass
UNH
U of South Carolina
Clemson
Northwestern (men only)
Texas
Texas A&M
USMA

| Why not hold it the same weekend as the NCAAs? There's little if any overlap (even for referees), and that way, precious weekends aren't used for YAT (yet-another-tournament).
I'm not claiming that this event is useless. I kinda like the whole idea. However, as one can see from the national, sectional, and local (not to mention collegiate and international) schedules, the weekends are pretty well booked up.
Doing it on the same NCAA weekend doesn't conflict with anything and will be a nice diversion on this newsgroup as we discuss which club will win the big one.

| I suspect Georgia Southern Univeristy will be very interested in participating in this.
Nice work.
Send me info on it please.

That was my suggestion too. It was decided that it would be better not to conflict for reasons of referee availability (NOT a big issue IMO) and to avoid Spring Breaks (again, NOT a big issue, IMO). Although this does carry more weight with me... the idea of having a week with people away from campus immediately before our biggest event of the year doesn't particularly appeal. Of course the idea of having the week immediately before it freed up from all that pesky school-work and therefore the possibility of dedicating the time to training could be nice....
I also would have preferred having the tournament closer to the rest of our collegiate competitive schedule (we follow a standard NCAA competitive season although we practice outside of the allowed times).
In any case, at this point it's fairly well set for this coming year.
More news as it becomes available.

| Not sure what your implication is....
I'm sure the idea of a club nationals has come up many times before. Bruce Capin is actually doing something about it and hosting next year. Are there any other similar competitions already existing?
Whether or not an idea is new has little bearing on is quality. What matters in things like this is the quality of the execution. That will need to wait to see how the first 2-3 years go and then we can judge. Until then, do you know any clubs that might be interested in participation?

| I think it's a great idea that's long overdue.
There are any number of competitive programs that retain "club" status for any number of reasons from economic to Title IX, several of which have an established track record of beating varisty (read "NCAA") competition.
There are also major schools such as Michigan State and UCLA who field teams at club level, so why not feature an "Alternate Nationals."

| oiuyt,
Ok ok... I'll elaborate. Last school year (the one that just ended) my now former school (Purdue) attempted what you're suggesting. You'll probably hear from our club president, Will Read, about it sooner or later.
We may have been working on too short of a time schedule but one thing we noticed is lack of people with resources and time to commit plus the desire to travel. What I've suggested to him is having an club collegiate "league" where clubs fence clubs regionally and send their best teams to a club championship. The location could be shifted from year to year so that schools that have wanted to host such an event have the opportunity to do so.
Sure it's an undertaking, but the benefits could be enormous. It will take several years of poor to mediocre showing before it really looks attractive to some clubs, but I think it could work.
Contact Will Read readwl@purdue.edu and see what's up. Tell him Mike Strickland told you to contact him regarding this enormous undertaking. |
