| fencing survey Hello,
I am a fifth grader at Willowville Elementary. I started fencing
about a year ago and hope to continue in the sport. My class has been
assigned a research project, and my teacher agreed to let me do a
project related to fencing. But the hard part is getting a survey to
a population of fencers, so I am hoping you can help.
I have a hypothesis about foil and epee fencing. I need several
responses so I can either prove or disprove my hypothesis. Please
reply to the survey if you can.

e) other (specify):______
3) I agree with the number of rules/restrictions in epee fencing.

On the whole, very good, and the new changes for foil are a good thing, not because i dislike flicking, but i think a flick should still have some thrust behind it, rather than just a graze. |

| I applaud our young fencer for the challenge he's set for himself. I'll get around to answering the survey later.
And I'm also looking forward to the extensive arguments and grandstanding here that will inevitably be generated by his questions. |

You'd find it very hard to fence without them! We'd all be hitting each other with cricket bats...

They establish the framework in which the game is played. Without rules consistently and evenly applied the game loses a significant part of its point.
So why wasn't sabre included in your survey?

Necessary to level playing field and reward skill and effort in fencing, to deter bad guys in general life (as if there were real life outside of fencing). | Good luck with your survey and report. Will you share the results with us? |

9) In general, what is your opinion of rules? In foil I like how it rewards the attacker with the establishment of Right of Way. The rules help maintain a sense of order amidst all the chaos going on. In epee' I think that the rules being stripped to the minimum is good for that particular weapon and forces one not to be reckless.
Hope this helps

9) In general, what is your opinion of rules?
Rules provide structure. In terms of Fencing they control the flow of actions [especially in ROW weapons] and provide saety [especially in Epee]. In the ROW weapons they also allow a referee to provide a subjective descision on the events that have just taken place. Modern Foil suffers from poor interpretation of the rules at medium to low levels. What causes this is open to debate.
I do not believe that one discipline is inherently superior to another [just that Epee is better ]. |

9) In general, what is your opinion of rules?
The fencing rules are a bit too vague in some areas, poorly worded in others. I think that they communicate the spirit of fencing fairly well, in general. They're also in French, which makes things difficult. I speak French, but not well.
Generally speaking, rules are a necessity. They provide a framework in which to do things, be it playing a game (sporting rules), going to work/school (in which they're often called "policies") or living life (laws).
Unfortuately, it's hard to create rules with balance -- either things that need restricting aren't properly restricted, or things that shouldn't be restricted end up being included.
So, rules suck. Too bad we need them. |

Rules are required for an orderly society. That being said, some rules are stupid and should be either bent or broken. But, overall, while necessary, I'd say rules suck. Except when they're in my favor. |

9. They are there as a guide, not ment to be broken but some are open to interpretation. Just look at ROW and see if people agree every time. Its all about convincing the director you did what you did. |
