Epee and Foil Fencing Survey
----------------------------
1) Do you fence with a foil or an epee?
Epee

2) I use the weapon indicated in (1) because:

e) other (specify): For my peace of mind I need what rules there are to be called consistently. I have never once felt my epee result was do to poor directing. I started with foil, but my frustration with the directing led me to switch, though I do fence foil for fun a few times a year.

3) I agree with the number of rules/restrictions in epee fencing.

a) strongly agree

4) I choose to fence with the weapon specified in (1) because:
(choose all that apply)
a) it develops tempo
b) it develops hand-eye coordination
c) it develops dexterity
e) it stimulates the cardiovascular system
f) it keeps me mentally alert
g) other (specify): and peace of mind (see answer to 2)

All except (d)

5) I believe that foil fencing has too many rules/restrictions.

c) disagree

6) I believe life in general has too many rules/restrictions.

b) agree

7) I prefer foil to epee.

d) strongly disagree

8) When fencing I follow international rules strictly.

a) strongly agree

9) In general, what is your opinion of rules?

I think that rules are necessary in life, but should be kept to a minimum. I think the most important thing about rules (in fencing and in life) is that they should be clear enough that everyone can understand them (counter example: tax law or the vague interpretations of fencing right of way) and enforced uniformly and thoroughly (i.e. nobody gets off easy and no one gets picked on).

Perhaps this kid is a very advanaced 5th grader. He knew that on the topic of "living with rules," including sabre fencers would skew the data.
