There is a new private message function integrated in this board which you can access from the "my profile" link. To get to the older private messages, use the url: http://www.fencing.net/cgi-bin/forum/priva teview.cgi.

For the fencing email accounts: FencingMail.

Both of these links will be added shortly.

Very cool.
But pray tell... What is this "Rating" thingy? Nothing like Bayer-Hunter's Nerd-o-meter, we all hope. I've got a rating of one. Is that bad? Should I see a doctor? Did we USED to have ratings?

One more thing. Has this overhaul rid us of George Washington and his ilk? (or Elk, judging by the mentality).

The "rating" link allows you to rate other members of the board from 1 (worst) to 5 (best). The intention of ratings is so that new members can take a look at someone's rating to get an idea of how good or how 'full of it' another's posts are.

As more improvements get completed, I'll post them here.

Echoing swordsens' comment, I think the rating feature could be too much of a vector for flamewars and trolls/provacateurs/grudges (or else a meaningless 'everyone's a five star! ' warm-fuzzy). People will figure out on their own whom they like/trust.

I notice you can set your profile so that your rating is not displayed. Which I immediately did, though no one availed themselves of the opportunity to rate me.

I've seen such "member ratings" spin madly out of control (like a saber fleche, perhaps?). It promotes cliquish exclusivity and hard feelings.

I would politely ask that you please remove that message board option.

I'm too new here to know what the "old" look was like, so I have no standard for comparison. But it's much clearer, faster and "user-friendly" than a lot of other boards I've stumbled across!

One of the last times the board was upgraded, it took the member names and assigned the member numbers alphabetically and not by date joined. After the upgrade, member numbers were assigned by date joined.

FYI - the upgrade date was 3/16/00.

As to buddy list - it's one of the features within private messaging. If you click on the 'faq' link above (in the forum menu - top right), you can learn more about the features in this version of the board.
