"Yes, you had better start explaining. And for clarification, the contract subordinated me only to those who signed it - your husband, as you clarified. It included protection of the people in general, but not subordination to them."

"I am not asking you to be subordinate to me. I see us as equals." Zelda felt like if she was getting nowhere fast, so she took a dep breath, glared at the contary halfling and started talking very fast.
"I left the castle because I couldnt take it any more. Everywhere I turned there was something that reminded me of Arcon. The memories were getting to me. As much as I love moon, her pregnancy reminds me of him. Why couldnt it have been ME to be carrying his child? I am his queen....he chose me, not her all those years ago. Her wedding reminded me of how happy I once was with Arcon, the joy we shared on our wedding night. I dont know where that feeling has gone, its like it got sick of me and got up and walked away. I didnt intend actually to come dragon hunting with you, I just had to get out of the castle. Rose found me at the Two Seasons and I decided to come with. I disgused myself as I knew you wouldnt let me come. Yes the carrier pigeon to Moon was an after thought, but I THOUGHT of it didnt I? Give a girl some credit when credits due. I need to be me for awhile, not Zelda Queen of Arconia, etc etc. I just want to be me, I want to be happy again, I dont want to spend my life going "What if", I need a challenge, an adventure, something where I am not responsible for the outcome. So please, just let me come?"
Zelda finished and looked at Naekos with eyes bright with tears, her soul spent.

He hated it when they started to cry. It made things harder. "So you decided to satisfy your needs despite leaving your entire kingdom at severe risk. And you are lying to me again, when you say you did not intend to come with us."

"Okay, so maybe I thought about it. Honestly at the moment, in Arconia there is nothing for me. I am just a figure head. No body really cares what I am doing, as long as the garbage gets collected, toilets work, criminals are caught and the Bitter End is open they are happy. They dont need me."

"And who is catching the criminals right now," Nękos inquired, "or even keeping an eye out for them? There is a disgruntled band of thespians roaming about someplace; we have no guarantee they have left. The von Schmects are sure to be about. Tellurine is in the castle still most likely, and how loyal is he to his new king? I imagine there are plenty of others as well, who would love to seize such an opportunity. Just imagine what the von Schmects could do if they found out there was no ruler in Arconia. They would be firmly in control before you could return, even if you left this moment."

"And I do not want to prepare for an impending war anymore, but I am not running from that now, am I?" His face was beginning to change in the darkness. It was not stone any longer, but coming alive, and furiously so. "I understand the very simple concept that the well-being of thousands, perhaps milliions, of other people comes before my own. You need to learn the same, whether or not you like the position that you in fact chose for yourself."

"GOD you are infuriating. I know it seems selfish, but I just cant handle it anymore. If I could have divorced Arcon I would have, but I cant, not at least until he turns up for long enough and Latenight wakes up. Of course I feel guilty in some ways about leaving everything. But I had to, I was not being a useful leader. Moon was always better at the stuff anyway. I trust her, more then I trust myself at the moment. And God knows that you know that a leader who is not committed is worse then a leader who isnt there. Naekos, I am scared, scared of what might happen, what is happening. I dont know myself anymore. Thoughts come into my head, that I dont know where they come from, or why they are there. I am scared of myself. I am afraid to be alone, in case someone atttacks me. I am scared for Arconia, for all those wonderful people who have taken me into their hearts. I cant just stay there and wait, I have to DO something." This last outburst seemed to have exhausted her, and she slumped onto the ground, her chest heaving.

"Go back to camp then," he instructed, "and find yourself a place. Sleeping will not be dry tonight. I am finding more food." And with that, he turned and disappeared into the foliage.

"You noticed?" He did not bother to turn around, but he stopped.

"Because we are friends, as well as allies. I dont want to walk away while one of us is still angry. I can understand why you are angry at me, hell if I was you I would probably be pissed off at me too, but as I said, I had to get away, and if I was going to run, it may as well be doing something useful."

"You lie to me multiple times, try to disguise yourself, enlist the help of another I have to work with, get her to lie for you, and then dare call me an ally, let alone a friend? I get more straightforward information from Zarconian informants." At least he had finally turned now.

"You mean there are some Zarconian Informants left??? Naekos I'm sorry. I know I really should not have done what I did, but it was eating me up inside. I had to get away, Rose realised this, but didnt want me to come. She wanted me to go back to Arconia, in fact she was going to escort me there, I changed her mind. Dont blame her, she is in service to me and thus has to do what I tell her (most of the time). At least with me here you know where I am!" her voice brightened on the last sentence, though she knew it would take alot more then words for the swordsman to get over his anger.

"Of course there are still informants. I still have informants in your own government, if you would like to know. And Rosaline should know her duty to disobey improper orders, which yours certainly was. And if you know so well that you should not have done what you did, then it is not too late to ameliorate the situation, and simply return."

"I can't. I can't face the memories Naekos. They haunt me. Let me stay, please, let me deal with memories without the reminders. Please." her voice was soft, desperate, and aching with sadness.

The Swordsman stepped closer, crouched down, growling, bringing his face level to hers as she sat on the ground. "I am quite tempted to send you off into the night simply for the fact that you lied to me."
