Array the best foil flick grip? which grip is the best in foil fencing for flick??? -

Array Don't bother, flick's efficieny has being reduced by the new rules. However, the pistol grip would obviously be the best choice. Its hard to think of flicking with a french grip. "Man is how he behaves sword in hand."

Array I would think this is a matter of preferance. Asking people about grips is like asing about restaurants. It might be good, but chances are fair it just wil not be for you.
I am not sure that the flick will be eliminated with the new rules, only the methodology and technique. The move is now a part of Foil, and will not be goiing away any time soon. All bleeding stops..... Eventually. -

Array it'll just be like flicking in epee with the increased contact time. Its very doable, just much harder to land a glancing flick. -

Array Visconti is the best grip for flicking I think. But that's just my personal choice. . . To be able to consistantly flick in bouts, you will probably need a pistol grip, I have seen people flick with french grips, but they are the lucky slap kinda flicks. . . Homestarrunner forever!~!

Array Actually, french grips do well for flicking. They're poor for strong infighting parries and dealing with strong parries when making thrusts.
Fly swatters don't have pistol grips for a good reason. -

Array I think fly swatters would be better served with sabre grips... With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter -

Array It always seemed to me to be a lot easier to develop better point control than to develop longer reach. But I'm pretty short so maybe that has something to do with it.

Array unfortunately for me, my coach knows how to flick to my flank using a french grip. he kinda uses a sabre like grip when he wants to flick for the added strength...
by the way, i'm a little confused about the new rules for foil. do they also require more force on the tip for the light to go off or is it just a matter of leaving the tip on target longer??? -

Both, though the "more force" bit hardly matters as flicks tend to hit with sufficient force for the new rules already. -

Array For awhile I really really liked visconti, but I just got a brand new Belgian grip and I love how it feels. The whole thing with the rules is that they are getting rid of "whips", if you flick correctly then it won't be as much of an issue. RebelFencer's Awesome Quote of the Week:

However, this last Saturday I did see rebelfencer do an insane pivot-esquive counter-attack with a flick that hit the far side of the shoulder. So the belgian can't hurt flicks all that much. -

Array I don't lose very much point control using a pistol grip over a French grip. It's all a matter of how you hold it--the grip of death will kill your point control no matter what grip you use.
Last time I tried the Belgian grip my fingers went numb for a week. -

Array Visconti is the best grip for flicking in my minds eye. I have seen people flick with french grips, but they are ussually half slap/flick action and hurt when they land. (Soory french grip users).
As I understand it the new rules will equire more presure to go off and hence make flickers hit harder if they want to flick like they have been.
Thrusting and traditional fencing moves will become more commonplace when the new rules go into effect. Many of the current "higher level" fencers will have to learn mor traditional techniques. Similar Threads -
