| on the restraunts bit...
do NOT go to the chinese buffet around the corner from UNH (one of three restraunts in the town). I've been a couple times, and feel awful after I leave there.
Take a ride down to portsmouth for food, more and better options.

p.s. does anyone know if the event is being held in the dungeon (indoor track facility) or upstairs in whittemore? |

| Personally I LIKE said chinese buffet. It'll be interesting seeing how many hungry teams they can handle all at the same time. :)
Going to Portsmouth (right where you get on/off I-95) there are additional options including Red Lobster, Olive Garden, TGIFridays, etc. as well as a mall (Fox Run Mall).

| I also predict either Leo Cook or Pat Reardon to take mens foil.
What is the format? Is it everyone together in one individual tournament or is it separated by strip?

| And they'll have to get through me
I'm definately excited about this weekend. Circumstances prevented me from going last year, and it was kinda upseting. I'm just glad Clemson still finished second without me.
Nothing to stop us from taking first this year though! |

I hear it's the NIWFA format. |

| at the end, the top 5 A strip fencers, top 3 B strip fencers, and the top C strip fencer (i'm not sure about those numbers) are seeded in a DE table for an individual championship for each weapon and sex. this wasn't held last year and i'd like to see it held if there's time. |

Last year, teams had flights scheduled for as early as noon on sunday.

| well, whoopsies, my mistake.
pool's cool too.
true, teams had to leave early, but also things weren't exactly organized and on time (no offense to the people running it; it was the first year) |

| Well, henceforth the individual tournament must be held: subsequent to last year, it was built into the constitution of the organization holding the championships
I'll probably show up at least one of the days this year to watch.
I wish I could fence in it and win sabre O well....maybe next year.

| A pool of 9 isn't all that jolly. Takes quite a bit of time. I hope they do find a way to squeeze time in for it though. |

| Given that you're returning the squad that dominated last year, yeah, you have a good shot at it.
Most of the top teams last year should be expected to finish near the top again this year. UMass, USMA, UNH, and Florida in both genders, Northwestern in men. Smith, which was near the top in women last year, should experience a significant drop-off this season. It'll be interesting to see which of the new teams places near the top and to see which teams post results that are significantly different from last year's competition. One of the interesting things about this competition is that there's very little crossover in comeptitive schedules between most of the teams. We really have very little idea of who fences for, say, Navy, or how good they might be. Now that we have a previous year there's some information (although college teams can change greatly year-to-year based on graduation, etc.), but until we have a slightly longer history to gauge patterns on we're still mostly in the dark.
We should know by this time next week, and until then we just get to have fun guessing.
Pools of 9 aren't all that bad when you use multiple strips. Triple stripped and it's less time than a pool of 6 (36 bouts on 3 strips instead of 15 bouts on 1 strip). Figure the pool of 9 should take about an hour even in epee or foil. The pool format has several huge advantages, the most obvious one being that it's hard to figure out a good seeding method for DE's when people come out of different strength pools (is the #5 A strip better or worse than the #1 B strip? My money would be on the B strip in most cases, but it'll vary between the weapons and year to year).
