"I doubt anyone could fully understand him," Krasala replied. "But we don't really have to. He grew up on the streets, always hunted. He'd been nearly killed more times before he could walk than most have been their entire lives - and I'm including soldiers and criminals there. But he kept his faith, and his morals. And he survived. Then, when he started looking around for justice, and couldn't find any, he decided to give it out himself. We just joined up and help him with it. He never had anybody to protect him, so now he tries to protect other people. Never really had anybody to love him, so now he tries to love other people. He grew up in the worst this world has to offer, and so now he sees it everywhere. Maybe a little too much, but most of us see it far too little. So I guess it balances out."

"I see...an interesting way to show love...."

"Speaking of love..." a new voice said. Someone stepped out from behind a tree, arms folded across his chest, swollen & injured face in as much of a scowl as he could manage. "We have unfinished business, Princess."

"Holden," Moon growled. "Now is not the time for this." Her anger was so great that she momentarily forgot about her new escort. Despite what she had learned from the Swordsman's men, she still wanted to have her chat with him & to say farewell to her husband. And if this creep made her miss either one...

"We have some options, here, my dear," Krasala interjected. "You can deal with him, as you so obviously wish to, or I can, and Slade here will escort you to this meeting you wish to make."

Holden stood his ground. "I want no trouble from either of you." He nodded to the two who flanked Moon. "I only want the Princess."

"That's 'Queen' now, in case you haven't forgotten," Moon stated.

"I haven't forgotten." His voice grew cold. His good eye slitted. "But nothing you can do will make me want you less."

"Then you'll have me," Moon said with sudden sweetness. She smiled wildly from right to left, then walked toward Holden, eyes on him. Surprised & pleased, he began to smile as well. When he held out a hand for her, she allowed him to take her. Then, she said, "But we'll see about the wanting..." With that, she raised her knee in a swift jerk, straight between his legs. He doubled over in pain, with a roar, then attempted to stand straight. "I told you I didn't want you!" Moon then punched him square in the face with such force that she knocked him over. With a smug look of satisfaction, she turned to Krasala & Slade. "I told you I didn't need guards." Then, she turned on her heel & began to finish crossing to the stables.

Krasala raised an eyebrow at her brother behind Moon's back. He simply nodded back in approval.

The travelers stood ready to go at the stable, Meekal, Darion & Ken-Dall in a small circle. "...And I don't think she'll be very happy about it," Meekal said to the woman.

"No," said a voice behind him. "She is NOT happy about this!" Meekal slowly turned, caught talking about his bride. Moon stood there, hands on her hips & a very perturbed expression on her face. It immediately dissolved as she went to him, & threw her arms around him. "I am sorry that I was...held up," she said before she glared half heartedly at Nękos. "...not that you were of any help."

His mount halfway through the gate, the Swordsman was suddenly forced to reign him in and turn. "And how am I supposed to leave with as many good-byes as you feel required to say? But no, this is exactly your intention, is it not? Simply to stall us forever?"

"I'd love to have you out of my sight for a good long while, so I can assure you that this is NOT a 'stall'," Moon stated, feeling her frustration rise again. "You know why I'm here, besides the fact that my HUSBAND wished for me to be here, as you heard him say." She gestured toward Krasala & Slade. "I am here about them. I will not live my life with two guards attached to my hips."

"Perhaps not your life, and perhaps not your hips," the Swordsman returned. "But you will spend the time that I am gone, with them in close attendance, as per our earlier agreement."

"Our 'agreement' did not include this! Fine, they can follow me, but must they follow so close?" Moon broke away from Meekal, & put a hand on the rider's arm. "Nękos, please," she said in a lowered voice, "the danger against me has passed. I know how you feel & I understand your caution. But please, be reasonable. I am more than capable of surviving until you return."

"More than capable of surviving...?" he echoed skeptically. "I have seen your 'capabilities' in the past. Please, do not take offense; I just want you safe. Think if Meekal had been but a moment or two later arriving in your room the other night - you would be dead. Seconds can be life or death; they must remain near. The current danger is passed, but what new danger arises that we know nothing of?"

"And I will be safe. Former enemies have been vanquished. There is no one left who wants to harm me," Moon said. Then, she implored, "Please, Nękos, let me prove to you that I am capable. I will agree to an escort, but not a constant shadow." She nodded to her guards. "They have seen it...I hope you will too."

Meekal said nothing. He fully supported Nękos in any & all decisions regarding his wife & Queen. Instead, he watched with the others, reaching for her, touching her shoulder. How he wished she would just stop fighting for once. But then, that wouldn't be the woman he loved.

    "Please?" she repeated.

Nękos looked to Krasala, who explained: "She dealt with a man in the corridor, named Holden. He was relatively small, a fresh cut over his face. Acted friendly, kneed him in the groin, punched him in the face."

The Swordsman nodded, knowingly. "I gave him the cut, surprise of surprises." Slade just rolled his eyes. "And I imagine he was unarmed, aside from not expecting any sort of attack." He turned back to Moon. "I am sorry, but he really does not count. "Your shadows will remain. Because there are always new enemies, new threats. Only vigilance can keep you alive with any sort of reliability. Now, one more goodbye, and let us be off, the sooner to return." Why did she have to make this so damned hard for him? Did she think he enjoyed tearing them apart like this?

"Damn you," she muttered, & allowed Meekal to take her into his arms again. This is not over, Nękos. Then, she turned to her husband. "I love you."

"I love you," Meekal told Moon in between kisses. "I promise I'll hurry back. No matter what, we'll be together again." He wiped a tear from her cheek & murmured, "Come now, no more tears. All will be well. After all this time, you're finally getting rid of me for a while! Enjoy it."

"Never," she whispered, choked with emotion. Then, they kissed once more.

At last, they separated, & he shifted the pack onto his back. "Please understand that we just want you safe. Both of us."

She nodded reluctantly. "I understand." And she really did. She had the love of two completely different men, for completely different...yet remarkably the same...reasons. It hurt her to see them both go. She moved back to Nękos, & touched him once more. "Please, take care of him. And yourself. I'd die if anything happen to either one of you." Then, she kissed his hand.

"Well," he replied, "I can't have you doing that, now, can I? Guess I'll just have to live a while longer."

From the side, Senyik silently applauded. Maybe he was learning, after all...

"Oh, darn...dash my hopes," she countered wryly, but added a wet wink for good measure. She & Ken-Dall, who kissed Darion one last crushing time, backed away from the group & joined the guards. "Now leave, all of you, before I cry."

Darion mounted his horse and looked to Meekal who soon did the same. The group paused for a minute and no one said a word. Darion's eyes were locked on Ken-Dall. He didn't know what to say that hadn't already been said and his gaze spoke volumes in itself.

"Don't worry, they're just dragons." he finally said, trying to smile. Ken-Dall just shook her head and a similar forced smile appeared on her face. Just then, Onyx next to Darion turned and headed back toward the gate. Darion gazed a few moments more at Ken-Dall before turning his horse and following suit. The rest of them did the same.

    So their journey began.
