Mask problem(s)

My mask was recently punch-tested by someone who didn't quite know how to use the tester. It was one of those that can exert much more force, but are supposed to be stopped by the thumb at the right force. Thusly, my mask has several wider than usual spaces on the side, right by where the bib meets the back of the mask. If I bring this mask to a tourney (next such one for me is the Pomme de Terre in June), will they fail it because of this? If so, can I beat the above person over the head with the mask? Can I do it even if they don't fail it?

By all means! Beat them over the head with it. I've had an inexperienced amorer ram the tester through the mesh and then pass it. The mask was fine before he tested it.

I had some friends from another club lose three good masks from that, because at the tournament they had some kids (like under 12) doing the testing. My friends were busy at the sign in table and didn't catch it until it was too late. As far as I know they had to trash theirs, but I'm not sure if there's anything you can do to yours...sorry

Sometimes they can be fixed. You can push the mesh back into allignment.

What you have to consider the mask gets it strength from several areas. One being the metal itself, but there is also the angle of the mesh (see Appendix A), the absence of dents, and the weaving of the wires.

You should always take out the dents and any deformity.

There are several methods of recrimping the wire where they will passed the 12 k test. The problem with some local armourers they have never been trained in the proper used of a punch. They think they have to wigggle the punch into the mesh in order to test it.
