| Teaching elementary school- I had pets-so many-as a part of the classroom. Interaction teaches the students compassion and caring for those who are dependent.
My favs are cats and dogs at home, as well as several parrots.
I like reptiles a lot. Our Asian Water Dragon was so affectionate. I have saltwater tropical fish at work. My oldest daughter is at university to become a vet. Her specialty is large an exotic animals. She is an amazing young woman- I wish she liked fencing.

| Ah, cats.....
I could never get past the fact that a cat will go rub it's feet in it's own crap (sorry, litterbox ) and then proceed to walk all over your countertops........yuck.

| Yes, but a dog will lick its own privates and then lick your face. |

| Cats vs. Dogs Dogs are more intelligent than cats. And they have more work ethic. I've never heard of a shepherd cat, or a watchcat, or a guard cat, or a police cat, or a bomb/drug sniffing cat, or a sled cat, or a retriever cat, or even a friendly cat.
Loyalty, strength, companionship, intelligence, hard work, and even some awesome wolfishness.
I always feel like nobody wins with cats - the cat is useless and mean to you, and doesn't even really like you. In turn you don't like the cat - but you are morally obligated to feed it and care for it. OK, maybe the cat wins.
But the best part about dogs is companionship. You can really become friends with a dog in a way that you just can't with cats.
Now I will hide under my desk with my arms over my head in anticipation of the nuclear retaliation from the cat people. |

Cats don't NEED a job. They've roped you and the dopey dogs into doing all the heavy lifting as they lounge about in the sun and occasionally swat a moth or toy with a small rodent. What's not intelligent about that? It sounds like a very good life to me.
And as for their being mean, cats sense when people don't like them. When they sense this, they react one of three ways - they're mean right back, they avoid the person altogether, or they do things to taunt them - probably just for kicks. My cat is the most affectionate creature I've ever known, and I've had pet dogs, cats, birds, fish, raccoons, children...
Cats rule.

The only problem is that eventually I have to take the critter away and end his fun, or it...just...stops...moving. The most interesting one I saw was him bounding around in the back yard with a snake in his mouth, flailing around from both ends. Now that he's an indoor cat, he can't toy with stuff the way he used to, so he moved on to bigger game - he stalks the children. It's really a riot. Heh heh.
Vel - you have a "doperman"? See, even the dog knows he's dopey!

| I like most animals. Including zooplankton. Copepods are ADORABLE. And so low maintance. Not good for cuddling though. I've never been allowed to have cats, but I love dogs (and most of the cats I've met), I adore guinea pigs and rabbits (except they kick) and fish and... not reptiles, really... or birds.. somehow those to me don't seem to belong in houses.

| definately dogs; considering the fact that i have one 150 lb mastiff and another, about 90 lb 5 month old mastiff puppy, i think i would have a big problem if i didn't like dogs, but trust me, I'd take 260 (and soon to be 300) pounds of dog over thirty lbs of cat (bi dogs are so easy to get attached to) oh, I don't like poodles though, they always struck me as not trustworthy. i'm fine with cats though, just like dog better. |
