Post rating

Hi!

Now, when one rates individual posts, one has the choice of approve/disapprove, and the option of adding a comment.

It is always easier to answer to a multichoice question, so I think that if one were given the possibility to tick as many as one wants from a list of descriptive terms more post ratings would be done, and they would be more useful for sorting posts. These descriptive terms could for example be:

1. thread drift
2. threadjacking
3. rambling
4. ad hominiem
5. repetitive post
6. new angle on old topic
7. complete treatment of topic
8. succinct post
9. fallacy in earlier post exposed
10. etc.

If combined with a filter, the indiviudual user can then filter away - or filter for - posts that fits his preferences.

What happens now with the comment line? How can that information be used in a meaningful way, without exposting the indentity of the commenter to the commentee?

Have a nice time!

Peter, most of your choices are negitive though. I've come across a lot of good posts that I though deserved the person some kudos (in the form of rep points). I think the multi-choice answer is too constritive.

Just my opinion though.

I guess that I was feeling overly negative when I wrote the post. Anyway, that is what option #10 is for, and I am confident that Craig can figure out good kudo options. Here is an idea for one: "#11: Seminal work - DHCJr-quality"

Also, I did not intend to take away the comment line, just that multi-choice questions give more answers.

Have a nice time!

I'm resisting the temptation to craft a posting (channeling MANGO) that manages to violate all ten with as few words as possible....hey - theres #1 &#2...

In a community forum too structured a format will work against what makes this place work so well.
Relevant/Educated/Good post, Incorrect/miguided/Bad post is sufficient information for rating contributors.

Having a free form comments field is perfect and sufficient because it allows the rater to specifically indicate why he rated as such. Anything more and you have a survey which may or may not be completed and more importantly may or may not be useful in determining the "expertise" of a contributor.

Remember, the purpose of rating contributions is for building the reputation of the contributor. By doing so it allows the community itself to identify who the experts are on the boards. Knowing the community rater of a contribution helps user determine the validity of the responses... not whether the contributor is a nice guy, a thread basher, or a bore! This site thrives because of the open forum which allows for the transfer and sharing of ideas without any requirement for a degree in fencingology! Imagine just how boring this place would be if the all the contributions only came from the established experts.

And IMO thread drift is not a bad thing. It would be nice to have a feature/functionality that allowed a drifted thread to be slipped over to a new topic line, and allow the original message intent to remain intact, but at least for now, the forum rules of quoting back and placing a header on replies will have to suffice.

That functionality exists on the admin/moderator level. The time to perform said tasks currently does not exist.
