Congrats to Cody. It's a great result, especially defeating Jeannet and Fischer.

Although, this is not the first ME medal.
Seth Kelsey has one this year, and one last year.

I thought Eric Hansen won the first medal in Argentina several years ago...

    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Yeah, that was quite a finish, beating both Vanky and Jeannet.

I'm surprised that he beat Jeannet - probably a combination of a good day for Cody and a bad one for Jeannet - Jeannet's sense of timing and his incredible reach (i've never fenced him, only watched) are a deadyly combination. Cody's defeat of Vanky doesn't really surprise me though. Having fenced both, Cody's reach, and especially the difference from his normal on guard position to a full extension, and the speed with which he can do it, would seem to be able to counter Vanky's sometimes unorthodox parries, especially as Vanky isn't that fast, although he does couple it with good footwork to escape - still, Cody's reach and extension speed seems like it would be enough.

I just hope that he has as a good a day at the Olympics as he did in Vancouver - his performance varies a lot depending on that. There's no question in my mind that on a good day our best fencers could do quite well, with Cody, Soren Thompson, and Seth Kelsey all having done extremely well in tournaments in the past year (Soren - top 8 at worlds, Seth - 3rd in Cuba).

Is his the FIRST time an American has won any medal in an epee World Cup?

    That's interesting.

Michel DESSUREAULT of Canada has won epee world cups and placed before...that info was on his website.

Cody was really on. I watched him through the 64 to the final 4. He changed up on Jeannet neatly - really a thing to see.

Obry seems to pretty much have Gang wrapped up around his finger. That's the second competition in which he beats the guy in semis. It's kind of funny because before the top 8 in Paris no one on the French team was really comfortable fencing him, and then Obry faced him off and just schooled him with an amazing distance game. He started fencing him with a pretty long distance, and the score was even, and when he closed it a little bit, Gang must have not noticed and took a lot of touches that he couldn't make up in the end.

With this result, it's a lot more than another medal for men's epee. Cody made a pretty big jump in the FIE standings, finishing 2nd in a GP means a lot of points, and he broke the 32nd spot, which means that if he can hang on (and I am sure he will, with the points from the OG coming in) until the end of the season, this will bring the US an extra seat in world cups, since for each fencer a country has in the top 32 they can enter an extra fencer over the 8 by world cup. This will give more chances to US fencers to compete overseas.
