Ladies and Gentlemen,
Humboldt State University Fencing Club and the Martinez Academy of Arms are proud to announce that this July, aspiring fencers everywhere will have the opportunity to attend the second annual Redwood Rapier Camp.
The rapier was the preferred weapon of the nobility throughout Europe for most of the 17th century; this long, slender-bladed sword was often carried with a dagger and saw frequent use in the streets and on the dueling field. Anyone who has ever wanted to learn about rapier fencing as it was once practiced in duels and as self-defense cannot afford to miss this extraordinary event!
Once again, internationally respected Maestri Ramon Martinez and Jeannette Acosta Martinez will instruct students on the fundamentals of rapier combat according to the principles of either the Spanish or Italian schools of fencing. All experience levels are welcome, and no previous fencing experience is required. Instruction will be tailored to the skill level of the participants.
From July 25 through July 31, participants will learn and practice rapier techniques by day; instruction is hands-on, and everyone will receive individual feedback on their progress.
In the evening, participants will attend lectures on a number of topics related to rapier fencing, including:
-Fundamental fencing concepts and terminology
-The origins and development of the Spanish and Italian schools of rapier
-Characteristics of the rapier, and how to identify a properly constructed weapon
-Great Fencing Masters of the past, and the books they left behind
-Tactics and the psychology of the swordfight
-How to fence against someone practicing another style of fencing
The focus of this camp will be to teach all participants fundamental rapier skills in a safe and friendly learning environment.
Housing
Participants will stay in the Humboldt State University dormitories with fellow participants. Meals are provided by the Humboldt State University cafeteria. Room and board is included in the price of the seminar.
