I don't know if that's possible to do or not, but I think that it shouldn't be possible to change someone's reputation based on posts in the water cooler. Whatever is being said over there doesn't really apply to what someone's "fencing related reputation" should be.
Plus the discussions in the water cooler are usually very opiniated and I could easily imagine that someone with a very sensitive character could change someone's reputation reading a post from someone else in the water cooler that they don't agree with at the time, but might not have voted on if they had taken the time to think about it.
As far as I am concerned, I never rate water cooler posts.

Okay, I got a red reputation yesterday for a post that was neither stupid, nor imflammatory, or had any substance to warrant a negative post other than the arbitrary whim of a user. If someone finds something like this, can we petition to have this negative rep removed if the powers that be agree?

LOL... I've found the same thing. I've gotten rave reviews for dumb posts ("What is HGH?"), and slammed for other dumb posts ("That's a santelli handle."). Meanwhile, the postings I work hard on sink without a bubble. Such is life. There is no rhyme or reason, but I think the reputation system will balance out as more people start using it. I forget it exists too... I read many great posts and forget to credit them... maybe a different icon, an animated trumpet or something, will remind people.

As for removing the weird votes... I don't think it's worthwhile. This is a whim-measurement system, after all. Some whims make sense, some don't, but they're still whims.

I ussually forget about the repuation points and I think everyone else does too when they are reading and posting. I have given a few good adn bad reputations out and Someone has rated my good a few times.

Until everyone starts "rating" everyone else, the point system will not mean a lot.

Oh the irony! There is a Christian forum I post in that has rep points. I have seen where someone starts a new thread for people to post in so that everyone else can give them rep points!!!!

Rate people! It works really, really well, and promotes better community. I was rating most posts I found amusing, but now my rating is going down down down for some unknown reason (ex. someone hates me) so I don't matter

That's happened to me too. I think that people either don't know the system very well, have something again the post-er, or are generally stupid. That's life, I suppose.

I got dinged for a post - and the dinger did not even write a motivation! What is the logic behind that? I think that if you want to disapprove, you should at least motivate *why* [now where is that "miffed" smilie, and how does one write it?]
