I think I honestly found it (epee) easier to deal with the height differences with the people I fence. When I started, there were plenty of fencers close enough to my height, but as we all got older, they got taller. I know that is a lame excuse (no pun intended) but hand and foot touches have saved me many a bout. (I have a fondness for foil and used to teach a beginner foil class until about a year ago.

I fence foil at California Fencing Academy based in San Jose. Why did you switch to epee? That makes me sad. =(
